This Flu Scare is Torture
Wondering, worrying waiting, like water drip drip dripping on your forehead.

WHO at Level 4 like fingernails on the blackboard.

Waiting to see how close the news reports are to where you live, like having some but not all the lottery numbers.

The thought of going out to stock up, just in case, like being stuck in an elevator.

The thought that people with strong immune systems are more vulnerable!?

That's just cuckoo.

2. I agree,
I think collectively we ought not throw the word "torture" around as loosely as we use to.

5. Breathe, darlin'

Everything is going to be all right. If you find yourself falling into fear, just filter the type of info you get--stick to the official pronouncements (from official sites) and avoid the speculation. That means definitely staying away from the 24-hour news channels--they have to fill all that time with SOME sort of crap, most of it useless.

Be well.

6. Here are 4 things you can do to feel empowered:
1) Stay informed. Don't panic, just read the information.

2) Realize that this strain might infect a whole lot of people, but the mortality rate is probably less than 2%.

3) Buy these 4 things: OTC cough medicine, N95 masks, Tylenol, and powdered Gatorade mix. They're all things you should stock anyway. Not stockpiles, just enough.

4) Have enough food in your house for 3-4 weeks.

Viruses have been around for hundreds of millions of years. Some of them can hurt us. We don't know how bad this particular strain is yet, but making some basic preparations can make one feel a whole lot less worried.

11. Electrolytes are good if you need to hydrate (if you get the flu).
The Tylenol is for fever reduction.

N95 is a standard...like 10W40 is a standard for motor oil. It's the NIOSH rating for a mask that blocks 95% of particles greater than 0.3 microns.

19. They're not. The masks provide a "spray barrier" for coughed or sneezed mucus.
...and they keep you from touching your nose and mouth.

It's far from 100% protection, but aside from a sealed respirator, it's the best you're going to do....and it's a cheap precaution.

23. Yeah, I just used Gatorade because it's universally available.
There are a lot of mixes that are good for hydration that don't have all of the sugar and preservatives and dyes that Gatorade has.

30. Anything that provides electrolytes and essential salts.
If you want to move to a larger-scale problem, a pandemic flu would disrupt our transportation infrastructure. Gatorade (or lemons) might not be available at your local store for a bit...which is why having them on hand before it becomes a crisis is important.

13. There is so much about this flu that is suspect.
"This is rather astonishing to realize, because for this to have been a natural combination of viral fragments, it means an infected bird from North America would have had to infect pigs in Europe, then be re-infected by those some pigs with an unlikely cross-species mutation that allowed the bird to carry it again, then that bird would have had to fly to Asia and infected pigs there, and those Asian pigs then mutated the virus once again (while preserving the European swine and bird flu elements) to become human transmittable, and then a human would have had to catch that virus from the Asian pigs -- in Mexico! -- and spread it to others. (This isn't the only explanation of how it could have happened, but it is one scenario that gives you an idea of the complexity of such a thing happening).". -Naturalnews-Mike Adams

I find it very odd that they report that good immune systems are at risk.Wouldn't that be the first time ever, such situation has occured? Why would someone want us to stop taking Vit C, etc., etc...food for tin-foil hats? I don't know, but it is highly suspect.

20-50 year old humans gots ta go.

You're right, like the OP said, that's CUCKOO.

Cut out preventative medicine, sell us backstock from a drug warehouse?

Only pigs or birdbrains think like that.

22. Ummm...no.
A bird with an avian virus would have had to have passed that virus to a pig with a swine virus (or two). A human with a human virus would have then had to come into contact with the infected pig. It's that simple.

...and the 1918 flu also had higher mortality rates among healthy young adults. Google "cytokine storm" for an explanation.

39. To me, any talk about a flu pandemic is suspect
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 08:11 PM by Art_from_Ark
The last true flu pandemic in the US was in the winter of 1968-69, and even then, it was minuscule compared to the 1918 flu outbreak, which occurred at a time when the US sanitary infrastructure was still in its infancy. There has been much fearmongering about potential pandemics of other strains of flu and other new diseases since then, but the worst incidents always seem to happen in 3rd world countries where the public sanitation infrastructure is not well developed.

With the current flu, most cases are occurring in Mexico, where sanitation conditions are so bad, you can't even drink the tap water.

26. why do you want to torture people with teh flu!!11!1!
Please understand this outburst.

You see, you said the words "torture" and "flu". That's bad enough. Worse, you dared to compare those two things in a way some people might not like or understand, which is essentially the same thing as a deliberate attempt to minimize the serious nature of both torture and the flu. It's therefore my duty as a reader of "teh intarwebs" to misconstrue what you're saying, based on a quick skim and a subsequent emotion-driven word-association internal mental tirade, as meaning you're more evil than Dick Cheney.

So there. That'll teach you.

Thank you for you time.
