They've found the Swine Flu "patient zero"...
...and boy are his parents embarrassed!

We must keep a sense of humor--it's critical!

4. Cute. But do pigs bite?
I always tell people that the animals with mouths are the most likely to bite.

7. Oh yea pigs can bite!
I grew up on a farm and yes pigs can put a real hurt on you. Never ever get near a sow that little ones, they literally can tear you up.

9. Do you know anything about cows?
I go hiking a lot and commonly com upon cows. Do they come at me because they want to kill me or because they think I'm there to feed them?

14. I don't know that much about grown cows
Except to say my brother and I used to love (if you want to stop from being ill, leave now!) walking behind them, and stepping in the "cow patties." Of course, we were under 10 years old, so we didn't really care how filthy we got!

And more recently, I know that calves are vicious little bastards, evidenced by a calf sucking my arm all the way up to the elbow. Yes, I got slimed by a calf! (Dairy farm, with some of the best ice cream ever!)

21. They squish when you step in them?
I think it was mainly youthful ignorance on our part. When they dried, the scat was interesting, because there was a lot of the grass and other stuff along that line in it.

Nothing better than having a cow pie Frisbee war.

15. On a serious note. I grew up on a dairy farm.

It is obviously best to completely avoid a bull if he is left to run amongst the cows. Cows with calves are best avoided as well. Cows without calves are most often simply curious or are hoping its feeding time. Always best to keep your distance, unless you have been around enough to figure out their personalities.

19. Thank you. I've been chased, but I don't know if they only chased because I ran.
Them cows hurt my feelings. I get along well with all the critters but the cows. Even rattle snakes don't pay me no mind. But the cows are always havin' a cow.

31. Check out Temple Grandin's book- Animals Make Us Human
She has a chapter devoted to explaining how cattle think and how to work with them.

27. FWIW, I used to do field work in college that involved spending lots
of time on dairy farms. Cows would come up to me all the time. The farmers said it was because they associated people with food and they have poor eyesight at distance. They come in close to see if you have anything good to offer.

30. Try being on top of a 20' ladder, getting lost in taking measurements
of Kestrel chicks, then looking down when you feel the ladder shake to find a dozen cows mulling around at the foot trying to figure out what the shiny aluminum thing is. They seldom seem to look up so if you try climbing down the ladder, they get spooked and run in all directions (including right into the ladder) when they notice you. I once spent about a half hour putting the death grip on a tree while a bunch of them set up camp under me occasionally scratching their rumps on my ladder. Ah, fun times.

32. Depends whether or not they are used to being fed
or rely on grazing.

Coming off winter, most have been fed.

They do kick and can move faster than most would imagine. Stay clear of rear hooves.

Most are real curious. Sit still and they will get mighty interested. I generally sit still on other side of fence ;)
