McConnell: Specter defection a 'threat to the country'
@ 2:50 pm by Michael O'Brien

Sen. Arlen Specter's decision to switch parties and pursue reelection as a Democrat is a "threat to the country," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) asserted Tuesday.

Reacting to Specter's defection from the GOP, McConnell accused the longtime Pennsylvania lawmaker of having practiced naked politics.

"I think the threat to the country presented by this defection really relates to the issue of whether or not in the United States of America our people want the majority to have whatever it wants without restraint, without a check or a balance," McConnell said during a Tuesday afternoon press availability.

"Obviously, we are not happy that Senator Specter has decided to become a Democrat," McConnell said. "If we are not successful in Minnesota…Democrats, at least on paper, will have 60 votes. I think the danger of that for the country is that there won't automatically be an ability to restrain the excess that is typically associated with big majorities and single-party rule."

McConnell said Republicans would focus more on pressuring centrist Democrats in preventing cloture on Democratic priorities, and accused Specter of making a "totally political decision" in deciding to run as a Democrat.

"We have moderates in our conference who have an enormous amount of influence. I can tell you, and you know this, because you're around here all the time, there's a good deal of difference between a senator from Maine and Mississippi. "But as Senator Cornyn's indicated, we intend to be competitive on a nationwide basis. I do not accept that we are going to be a regional party. And we're working very hard to compete throughout the country."

1. "If we are not successful in Minnesota…"
In other words, we need to buy off those judges that are already showing their bias by putting off the ruling, and for two of them not recusing themselves.

9. Perhaps he's right -- even the South will tire of them.
They'll be a no-region party. Or rather, the Party of NO will be no party.

18. It's called
Selective whining! They only whine when things don't work for "them"! I am also sure that if confronted, they can come up with all kinds of BS to say they they did not "abuse" their power!

Wonder what he will do if other moderate republican, who have been targeted for removal, follow Spector, and also jump ship?

8. If I'd been in a coma the past eight years, I wouldn't see the irony in the following statement:
"...whether or not in the United States of America our people want the majority to have whatever it wants without restraint, without a check or a balance..."

Are. You. Kidding. Me????

17. Amen.
It is the same base of financial support that we need to help ConservaDems detox from. There is no excuse for this b.s. deregulation from the 1980s and 1990s.

Do the moderates feel heartened or do they feel beset upon? Now the grind will be on to explain how it is NOT possible to legislate all the things we have waited for over 40 years for.

14. You just lost 1/3 of your 'moderates', fucknutz.
You started tossing them out almost 40 years ago, and now your grand strategy is turning your party into the 23%'ers party. If we Democrats end up with a super majority in the Senate - it is a result of democracy within the constitutional framework of our republic, and you know goddamn well that had you guys won 60 seats you would have used your hammer at every opportunity to drive your legislation through. In fact, back when you had only a slight majority, you were threatening to re-write the rules of the senate to abolish the filibuster entirely. But then again, you are preaching to your flock, your 23%-ers, to the Party of Stupid. Keep at it. They are listening to your every word. All 23%.

26. Exactly!!! That's a very revealing and chilling statement by McConnell. He and
other hard core GOPrs really think that party discipline and obedience to ideology is directly related to survival of our nation. Democracy, rational thinking, honesty, information, truth, and public discourse are not as important as the strength of the party of true believers. It's almost religious! This is how they cheat, lie, and steal...contained in this statement! NOTHING is more important than party and this mindset enables the "ends justifies the means" crap we've seen for 8 years (fake commercials, lying to congress, falsifying science, election tampering, bending the constitution, outing CIA agents, firing dissenters, creating an un-necessary war to support unitary executive, etc) Whatever keeps them in power to look after the "true america" is fair game and, conversely, whatever threatens their power (Specter) is a threat to america...LITERALLY.

This is sick, selfish, arrogant, stuff...I'm sure it's what they really think. We've heard it from Cheney for a long time. It's what they really believe!

Specter defection = weaker GOP = more democracy = more progressive legislation = weaker corporate empire and stronger middle class = socialism = weaker America (in their minds) = greater chance for terrorism and godlessness = the end of complete blessed dominance in the world. So Specter will have to be evil, flawed, traitor, selfish. They will have to redouble the crazy stuff since the ordinary BS isn't working. Their followers will have to be made even more fearful....This will have to be the end of America as we know it.! Someone should look in on Hannity tonight and report on the grim faces and dire warnings...
