3. False choice
We shouldn't have to give up anything to get this government to do what is logical, fiscally responsible, and correct.

5. My use of the term "give up" is to imply what we might have to trade a Ben Nelson or :shiver: Arlen
Specter to get a single payer bill passed.

You're right, of course. We shoujld not have to give anything up to get it.

7. At this point, we shouldn't have to trade anything, either
because the GOP, having shown themselves to be a party of petulant children who will vote against every Democratic measure, should be ignored completely while the plans are being hammered out.

Why give concessions to a bunch of spoiled brats who will never support anything, least of all health care for the country?

the op wasn't asking what we SHOULD give up- it was asked what would you be willing to give up IF needed?

always read the box-top carefully before trying to play the game.

4. how bout flag burning
I'd support an amendment to the constitution to ban the burning of the American flag, if it got universal single payer health care.

11. We have a fillibuster-proof majority. Give up NOTHING.
If we truly wanted to institute universal single payer health care, the repugs couldn't do a damned thing to stop it now. This is about as good of a chance as we're likely to see. If we don't do it now that we have the chance, then I will have lost faith in the Democratic Party.

12. Id give up everything to have medical care for my family
Insurance is not medical care. It is only the right to litigate for the right to collect a partial coverage benefit. This is why serious health problems end in bankruptcy.

13. I'd be glad to trade the outrageous amount we pay to the insurance company for a health care tax ...
More than happy. It would be better used, everybody would get coverage, and Mr H and I would no doubt come out ahead.

What the American people need to understand (and be told over and over again until it sinks in) is that we already pay more (in insurance) and get less (in access to care) than any other country on the planet.

Pay a tax instead? Sign me up.

Hekate

19. Given that the only big problem we can solve without spending more than we are spending now--
-- is health care, there's no need to give up anything.

22. We wouldn't have to give up anything if we can pay for it.
Slap a sales tax on everything except food, medicine and clothing purchases under $100. An extra few bucks on your big screen TV shouldn't be an impossible price to pay for healthcare.

24. We won.
At great cost in money and effort, we won. I ask you, if the winners are supposed to give up things, why bother winning?
But I'd gladly give up Insurance Company profits, Big Pharma price gouging, and the last shred of respect for the Republican Party.
I'd be showing them the commercials we'd air against them if they vote against health care, the spots with the dying kids and burn victims and widows getting huge bills. The spots that say "This is what the Republicans want. Suffering and death among Americans to make profit". The spots end with clips of the homes of Insurance Execs and leading Republicans. The lavish homes of Senators and Representatives and Insurance folks, superimposed over a tiny child's coffin.
So I'd have a different method than the ass kissing of the vanquished.
