What makes me furious is the media coverage of people as statistics.

A very possible answer to the high mortatlity in mexico could be the poor medical assistance provided to the sick people.
in today's Mexico newspaper "El Universal" it present cases of people that has been sent home, not once but twice and die at home.

http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/nacion/167640.html

This would not happen in the US.

By the way, Perote is one of the most beautiful places in the mountains of Veracruz.

Mexico needs to enact some laws to protect herself. It is obvious this company is not going to police itself.

8. Mostly at I.B.P. facilities. Where are all the dead A(H1N1)'s?
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 10:32 AM by HereSince1628
I just don't understand why it is that everyone thinks that mortality counts are more important than disease chararcteristics.

It is very clear, from those who deny the value of volcano monitoring, to the macho influenza deniers that the population needs to be educated about what surveillance and early warning is really about.

Detect, contain, mitigate. We Do NOT want to wait until there are thousands of deaths before preparation and reasonable actions are taken.

On edit:

It's odd that in our society there are elements demanding the right to carry concealed weapons to protect themselves from paranoid delusions, but it is deemed childish cowardice for governments to take steps to protect the public's health in the face of a threat recognized by professionals working at levels from local communities to the World Health Organization.

America enjoys a curious combination of paranoia and machismo.

problem. For example, you see Y2K mentioned a lot lately. If somehow we manage to figure out a way to sequester CO2 and other global warming gasses I am sure the global climate change deniers will say "See, told you so".

I think it's black/white thinking and consequently an absolutely zero understanding of process. And that is why they flip between paranoia and machismo, they are either in black mode or white mode. Sadly those are their only options.

edit: I also think black/white thinking gets much worse in fearful times, because brains tend to get somewhat paralyzed by fear. I think it's a survival technique to reduce options in case you need to act fast.

Jost et al characterized what makes conservative minds tick and BLACK AND WHITE thinking was big in their analysis.

But then as we have learned our party includes people to the right of Specter

29. Thanks for the link.
I think there is more to it than just the liberal-conservative left-right binary. I have known very rigid liberals, very adamant about their ideology, which strikes me as a basically "conservative" attitude. Weird, huh. But it's really not conservative, it's black/white - when their extreme ideology fails they flip to the opposite extreme because that is all they can see.

Who was that guy who was a communist in the 60s and then became a bushbot, perfect example. I forget his name but he was very prominent in the media in the early years of Bush II. Perhaps he's flipped back by now and that's why we don't hear from him much anymore.

I think most modern conservatives are really authoritarians, but if their authority were "liberal" (which is an oxymoron so of course it doesn't happen) they would be happy to be that.
They are happiest when they can be whatever their authority tells them to be.

Interesting though!

20. George Carlin had great bits on America's masculinity problems...
And so far as how many men will automatically, mindlessly support "wars," and the authority systems that lie and sell the need for such "wars" (that of course aren't actually wars) that machismo problem is VERY much a part of the equation re the overarching, simultaneous He-Man-yet-ass-kisser authoritarian tone of the country.

You see it everywhere, too, from greed, sexism, sports-as-religion, fascination w/bloodsport, HUGE vehicles w/flags, the silly Harley Davidson poser/affectation - it used to be that stood for an anti-establishment attitude, now you've got to be VERY pro-establishment to afford the bike and Tough Guy costume/accessories. Hilarious.

That's really about the only long term drawback I have w/my being covered w/tattoos: it makes me feel somehow tied into that nonsense. Fuck it, gimmie a Moped ;)

24. Let me add these are the people who lash out
make fun of the data

And will PANIC when the words DON'T Panic are used

They are already on panic mode as is, and that is why they lash, fear

In this case if we have a pandemic, they completely loose control... and that freaks them out

I read yesterday an interesting take on the masks

And lets get away from the it's effective or not debate.

This psychologist said, whether they are or not they serve a psychological use

It enforces the idea that this is serious to the it is not that serious crowd and it empowers the I am afraid and have lost control crowd, as they are doing SOMETHING

So there is a valuable service to the psyche

I found that fascinating.

18. In reality, the strain of flu that pigs get isn't very deadly to the hogs.
http://www.wnct.com/nct/news/consumer/article/swine_flu_impact_on_eastern_nc_hog_farms/36538/

SWINE FLU RESOURCES

Swine influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. The swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. Like the seasonal flu, swine flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe.

And Mexico is saying that they found no sick hogs in Veracruz.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090428/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_swine_flu_mexico

Residents of the town of Perote said at the time that they had a new, aggressive bug — even taking to the streets to demonstrate against the pig farm they blamed for their illness — but were told they were suffering from a typical flu. It was only after U.S. labs confirmed a swine flu outbreak that Mexican officials sent the boy's sample in for swine flu testing.

Mexico's Agriculture Department said Monday that inspectors found no sign of swine flu among pigs around the farm in Veracruz, and that no infected pigs have been found yet anywhere in Mexico.

Should we be looking to California for the source??

19. Education moment, native flu strains to native species are far LESS lethal
to native hosts

H1N1 is native to pigs

Why when they jump the species barrier they can become all that much more deadly

As is the WHO is exploring animal sanitary laws and revisions and we should revise our factory farming. OUr farms are not that much safer than they are in places like La Gloria, they are disgusting places where refuse pools are extremely toxic
