Well this was to be expected... and also as expected there were BREAKING NEWS banners as I woke up and turned on the News

No, not the three month old, RIP, the death. More will come. Not being ghoulish, being factual, very different. Sad that one has to put this disclaimer in this place where MOST people are mature, but some are simply NOT mature enough to deal with bad news.

2. You cannot handle the cross-posting of IMPORTANT news stories
breaking news fer you

You seem to be one of those I referred to, who are NOT mature when bad news hits

Some folks spend their day on MOSTLY one forum,

3. posted multiple times in GD already
and note that it was a toddler who died, not an adult with a healthy immune system. Furthermore, WHO is now saying there are only 7 confirmed deaths worldwide.

there's a difference between taking this seriously as a potentially serious matter and doing your doom and gloom thing.

People die from diseases. That's hardly a stunning revelation. We don't know that this will be a pandemic. You seem to be eagerly pushing that meme.

6. That it isn't (and hopefully will not be) a pandemic with high mortality isn't reason

for governments and health departments to be acting with what health professionals consider due diligence.

That the transparency of these agencies is whipped into sizzle to sell advertising by the media is an unfortunate side-effect of our times.

It's ok to be aware, it's ok to share information that is available. That isn't panic. It might be fascination, it might be concern, but what makes that wrong?

In a country where many of our citizens carry concealed weapons, and where many more citizens lobby for more opportunity to carry concealed weapons against often delusional beliefs about guns and their contribution to personal security, I find it odd that we object to communication of information about a threat recognized by health professionals working at all levels.

Sharing information isn't quite the same as panic. Panic is running for cover as people did in NY city at the sight of Air Force 1 flying over their city.

5. Thanks for taking the time to post this. This article contains a
little more info than the others. Not sure why people are so freakin' nasty on this board about posting a news article...

If you aren't interested in updates on what this new strain of flu is doing, you don't have to click the post & you certainly don't have to insult others... :eyes:

7. I'll tell you why, after much thinking about it, FEAR
It is the same crowd that also reacted the same way when the economy was crashing articles were posted

It is the exact same crowd that reacts this exact same way every time we have bad news

Another Du'er pointed this out to me yesterday, I had that hand on forehead moment... I had forgotten that from disaster service 101

The difference is, I don't have to keep them calm, NOT my job description any more

And the most rabid are even going into the Pigs were thrown out of airplanes by the CIA in Mexico school of thought...

And truth be told, if I wanted to keep them calm on a board, hardly possible... but to them, the NEWS STORY is panic inducing... just like the RUMORS are panic inducing in a refugee, temporary housing tacitly

As you said, the best they could do is ignore the news for their psyches.

11. Those two were SUSPECTED. One has since been definitively ruled
out, and the other is unlikely but final lab is pending.

14. You did a public service starting it! Information empowers people.
I'm trying to keep info. in that thread, so folks have one place to go for updates and background info. as this forum is so fast moving individual threads with good info. may get lost.

I'm popping in to WHO to see what their official statment will be and one or the other of us can post it.

I hope others post good info there too! It would be nice to have one info. central.

Yes, I expect there may politicization of public health isses and crises - hopefully the world will work well together.

In the meantime, ain't ya' glad Georgie boy isn't in charge and we have President Obama?

I'm heading back to the home base thread. heh heh The Mother Ship!

Oh,BTW, I found something from the CDC presser yesterday and posted it on the Mother Ship already, you were right, border closing at this point is a little like the closing the gate after the horsey is out.

15. I also concluded that those flinging poo are dong that out of their own fear
nothing I can do about people afraid of info

Same kind of person that quivers in a corner when they are in camp (as in evacuation camps) due to rumors

So I will, from now on, post the following at the end of every thread I start

I am sorry if information scares you

By the way, also looking at the possibly FIRST CASE establishes in Spain, person to person, no hx of travel to affected areas, that will surely raise the Level to 5.. that means three countries and two continents

16. My approach is just waiting for the facts as they come out and posting
from two reliable sources: CDC and WHO.

Also, in terms of opinions or an overview, "Effect Measure" a Progressive Public Health forum seems to have good progressive analysis.

I just posted over in your OP thread, the one I have been posting updates and data, to, the new WHO update, thankfully, they remain at level 4! That's good news, I hope this sucker dies out. In the meantime vigilance is prudent.

The new WHO Update5 is over on your OP, link directly below, as is a good discussion from "Effect Measure", that's the second link. I noted from "Effect Measure" that the poor little one who passed away in the US had actually come from Mexico (Mass Effcet quotes Bloomberg) to the US for medical care, so technically, that would be originally a strain right from Mexico and not the US one that caused the 1t US death, if we parse origins. Regardless, it is a sad story.

Good info here.

Title: From a progressive public health forum: Putting a face on those numbers.

I am guessing it will take weeks if not months to sort through what is happening and what will happen remains unkown, but fascinating and worth monitoring. There is a lot to learn here for everyone. :hi:
