Spanish authorities have confirmed 10 cases of the disease and 53 others are under investigation.

Spain has detected its first case of swine flu in someone who has not recently visited Mexico, although the patient had been in contact with a visitor to that country, Health Ministry officials said on Wednesday.

Spanish authorities have confirmed 10 cases of the disease and 53 others are under investigation. Up to now, all had been people who had recently returned from Mexico.

"The patients are stable and they are all responding very well to treatment," Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez told Congress.

A Health Ministry official said the case of transmission in Spain had been a result of contact with a person who had recently been to Mexico.
