The University Interscholastic League has suspended all athletic activity throughout Texas until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

"The health and safety of our student activity participants is of the utmost importance," UIL executive director Charles Breithaupt said in a statement.

"Taking every possible precaution to prevent the further spreading of this disease is an important contribution to the welfare of our great state, and altering the schedule of our events is a way to keep our participants safe."

4. That's the second district, at least, around San Antonio to do that.

3. Not a bad idea at all.
Better to err on the side of caution than to be sorry after the fact.

Even if it keeps just one person from getting ill.

8. The state academic meet has been canceled too
Public speaking, one act play, and many more events. Kids have prepared for this all year and worked their way through several levels of competition to get to the state contest--which was scheduled for this weekend.

9. I fully expected it to be for budgetary reasons.
There was talk in my TN county about having the funds to finish the school year, next year is more questionable than people realize. When the ultra-cheap babysitting service gets yanked, that will wake people up.

11. I have never wanted that, and I have yet to come across any Texan who does
I guess you trust Rick Perry more than others. I mean his word must be gold to you.

Do you really think that is what he thinks is best for Texas and is going to pursue it? Or could it be that he is going into a primary battle with a more moderate Republican and like an idiot feels he has to say something crazy to show how much of a man he is. To show he is standing up the the federal government which just happens to be where his opponent works and he wants to use that so he can try to run against President Obama instead in the primary and get the hard right vote to turnout. I guess a simpleton would look at it and just accept what he said at face value.
