Hooray for the Democratic Big Tent! Homophobe fundies always welcome.
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=h2009-223&sort=party

17 "Democrats" voted against the Matthew Shepard Act today....the raging homophobes were:

Dan Boren (Blue Dog-OK)
Bobby Bright (Blue Dog-AL -- received lots and lots of $$$$ from the DCCC)
Chris Carney (Blue Dog-PA)
Travis Childers (Blue Dog-MS -- received lots and lots of $$$$ from the DCCC)
Artur Davis (DLC-AL)
Lincoln Davis (Blue Dog-TN)
Joe Donnelly (Blue Dog-IN)
Bart Gordon (Blue Dog-TN)
Parker Griffith (Blue Dog-AL -- received lots and lots of $$$$ from the DCCC)
Mike McIntyre (Blue Dog-NC)
Charlie Melancon (Blue Dog-LA -- curiously, 2 of Louisiana's Republicans voted for it)
Collin Peterson (Blue Dog-MN)
Mike Ross (Blue Dog-AR)
Heath Shuler (KKK-NC)
John Tanner (Blue Dog-TN)
Gene Taylor (Blue Dog-MS)

2. oh fucking please
damn those particular dems all you wish but the fucking strong majority of the dem party supported this legislation, and who the fuckety fuck do you think introduced it, championed it and ushered it through passabge? That's right, dems. Damning the dem party for this is just moronic. they deserve kudos on this.

4. Democrats were conned into giving money to people who don't stand up for Democratic values

5. Seems to me the OP deliberately singled out those responsible
I didn't see any blanket condemnation of the Dem party. There was mention that several had strong support from the DCCC but their predilection for moderates in purple districts is well known already. Why are you blowing your stack?

6. Democrats who do not support core democratic values (like equality) need to be held to the fire
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 06:53 PM by FLAprogressive
I don't care what their districts are like -- they're cowards!

Republicans Mike Coffman, Greg Walden, and Bill Cassidy (who voted for the bill) are in deep red districts. They managed to show more courage today than any of these 17 hacks.

10. I agree with you
I'm not sure why Cali doesn't. Especially since she has a very recent comment calling Virginia Foxx-R a "pile of dog shit" I believe for her comments against this very same bill. Now, our Reps didn't make those comments to be sure but their votes indicate that on this issue at least they are closer to Ms. Foxx than they are to us ideologically.

I can see certain Reps taking more moderate positions on issues than the party at large, at least occasionally. I accept this as the price of politics. On an issue like this though it's indefensible.

18. th e title line is a blanket condemnation of the dem party
this is a case where the party desrves a lot of credit. Her accusation that the dem party loves homophobes is simply not supported here.

20. why is the party tricking good Democrats into raising money for homophobes? Would you want a KKKer
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 07:10 PM by FLAprogressive
to run as a Dem? Would you allow David Duke into the Democratic Party?

What's the difference between racism and homophobia?

11. Ah...the usual. Nothing like lack of empathy. Try an spin away, but the taint
of smarmy lack of compassion will forever stain. Stinks too.

14. Where, exactly then, do you draw the line?
Nowhere? Is David Duke okay with you?

If David Duke isn't, because of the particular people he hates, which groups of people fall under your definition of "not right to hate?" versus "okay to hate"? We know you think it's okay if a Democrat thinks hate crimes against gay people is okay. Any other people you think it's okay for Democrats to tolerate hate toward?

What I think you are doing is endorsing the nihilistic position that the only think that really matters is winning. That, not the "ideological purity" you mock, is the road that the Republicans took to get to where they are now -- they made deals with the devil to win, inviting in factions that ought to have been left on the curb of American politics, failing to realize that they were inviting in the very people who would someday destroy them.

If nihilism ever becomes the prevailing Democratic philosophy, count me out.

I will no longer vote for him. If that means a repuke in 2010, so be it. Maybe a real Dem will run in 2012.

15. I am embarrassed because they are all southern mostly.
I wish they would quit making us look like a bunch of backward idiots. Many are. That is true. But so many aren't. And we all get a bad rap because of idiots like these. And these are obviously the best choices we have a lot of the time. x(
