"They've taken God away from us."
glen beck referring to liberals this morning. And conservatives wonder why sane rational Patriotic Americans view right wing radio as a cancer on our body politic. Bring on the debate about the fairness doctrine (which has absofuckinglutely nothing to do with the first amendment.)

they've always had a hard time believing that people who are pro-choice, anti-war could somehow be on God's side too.

That was my first thought, too.

Like the people whose faith is shaken or threatened by the fact that *I'm* an atheist? Um... you might wanna do some self-examination, there, peeps.

52. The insecurity about atheists is so widespread.
I think many religious people (not all) deep down sort of recognize that their beliefs are very far-fetched. They truly want to embrace and BELIEVE their "faith" without harboring those pesky doubts. They are comforted by the fact that so many thousands and millions believe the way they do -- well, millions of others think that Jesus was the only magical human in world history, or millions of others think an omnipotent invisible creature hovers over Earth and rules the movement of each insect and makes life or death decisions for every living thing, or millions of others think that there is a place in the clouds where the holy are rewarded ... whatever the belief -- so that helps them quash that voice of reason within. When there is a dissenting voice, it causes those doubts to rise to the surface and disrupts their comfort zone. It's expressed as anger towards non-believers.

70. Agreed.
I *was* one of those people, from the age of about 12 to 22, give or take. When my husband started doing some very in-depth exploration of other crucifiction/savior stories and the parallels, and then research into how the bible was compiled, etc., etc... the deep-seated unease finally came out and I slowly transitioned from considering myself a Christian to an atheist. Even when I had been Christian, my science knowledge and background were always nagging me from deep within, but it took that nudge to get me to really evaluate things. It took me a long time for the insecurity to go from "hiding the doubts" to "fear of not having a god" to "contentment in science and reason as the basis for my beliefs."

:hi:

The Republican God seems to be pretty much a 98-lb. weakling.

56. Right after the Supreme Court decision, some wag came up with that line --
"As long as there are math tests, there will be prayer in the schools."

But apparently the Fundy God can only hear prayer when a GROUP of people are all saying the same thing out loud at the same time?

Didn't somebody talk to us once about making a show of praying in public?

Pretty soon, we'll be loading those church-goers on buses and sending them somewhere. You betcha.

I don't know about where you all live, but where I live, there's a church on every other corner. I drive by some of them on Sundays, and I don't see anyone out there blocking the doors to worshippers.

Here's a question: What church does Beck attend? Does he attend? I'll bet not.

I'm sure I brought God in from the car, but then I had to put the groceries away, and the dog needed to be walked, and there were messages waiting, plus I had a late lunch date, and now I don't know what the hell I did with God.

I'm sure He's around here somewhere.

I honestly think it's part of their PR campaign to convince mostly white, Christian males that they are being put upon. They are paying all the taxes, they can't pray in school, they can't put up a big old nativity at city hall, they can't have a missile launcher, they can't discriminate against women, gays and minorities, they can't kick out all the "illegals" and they don't get fair treatment in the press. WTF?!?
