NO weird baggy pants falling off our exposed asses. No tattoos everywhere.

But really great music and cheap pot. With such few penalites it was almost like being legalized - if you lived in a college town.

31. Now,
I went in a '61 bug that I had bought by working since I was 15, and rebuilt myself and installed an 8 track tape and custom speakers in. The hand brushed paint job was a classic. I did have a tophat, tailcoat, white gloves, spats, and a real (borrowed) gold tipped cane. That I had rather long curly hair that stood out from under the tophat to my shoulders just added to the image. I figured that if I was going to dress, I would go all the way to absurdity. It was fun.

Only the conservatives arrived in limos.

33. I didn't say anything about materialism.
I was talking about the "me generation" as the boomers were once called. That "special" generation who make the greatest music ever, had the best sex ever, expanded their consciousness, saved the world, ended the war, gave civil rights to African Americans, started the environmental and woman's movements, among other amazing feats of selflessness.

Although arguably their greatest accomplishment is somehow shrugging off that "me generation" tag and successfully pinning it on their children and grandchildren instead!

...the second "Me" applies to their children, and the third one applies to their grandchildren, who as self-centered as they are---if not more so.

36. Right, which is how they successfully managed to make everyone forget about that "me generation"
label and pin the blame on their children and grandchildren instead. And yet, what's more obnoxiously self-centered than taking an observation about your own generation and trying to project it onto your own children? It's the ultimate case of "I know you are but what am I?"

9. Broad...
As in Eli Broad... he made a fortune following the Boomer curve and trying to figure out what they would need next... first it was homes, then it was life insurance, then it was retirement fund management. He also did research on the Great Depression and how the first people to pull themselves out of the hole did it because they owned a lot of art... hence the Broad Art Foundation.

Brilliant man. I had the privilege of working for his company for nearly a decade.

Religion is the knot at the end of the rope for a lot of people, and the boomers are collectively a lot of people. Stands to reason.

What I don't get is why people who claim to be so in tune with God are afraid of meeting God through death. Curious.

Edited on Thu May-07-09 04:52 PM by mitchum
I think a very effective approach would be based on ancient Egyptian practices where one can still have one's material possessions after death.
Because, as we all know, if there is one thing that boomers possibly love even more than themselves, it's their...stuff.

71. Yes indeed! Corporate PR has become very sophisticated.
It is interesting to see lots of anti-boomer threads on DU lately. The Baby Boomers are a very large group of people-- there were conservatives as well as liberals, right wingers and left wingers in it.

Hannah Bell posted 1980 election data in another of those threads, showing the diversity of opinion

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=5609014&mesg_id=5609168

and 1984 voting data:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=5609014&mesg_id=5609168

My comments in that thread were more about the concerted, intense propaganda effort since then to move our political discourse to the right, out of fear of the counter culture and its talk about sustainable growth, ecology, human rights and economic justice. I recommended "What Liberal Media?" by Eric Alterman, for a detailed review of those campaigns.

It really is class warfare, and the Top 5% has won. Their "Trickle Down Economics" has proven to be Trickle Up Economics. Reagan's tax cuts for the rich and union busting have had far reaching consequences.

Corporate PR and lobbying have become more and more sophisticated. Keeping people divided and making it feel like fun. Rugged individuals.

46. Confused.
A generation that spanned two decades. Neither end of the age spectrum had much in common with the other or even the middle. The issues that the class of '64 dealt with (Viet Nam for instance) was history to the class of '80. Both groups are considered Baby Boomers, but the experiences widely vary.
