A redundant thanks for your help and advice re: Cancer
Edited on Wed May-06-09 08:04 PM by Mike 03
This is the week my father is receiving his stem cell transplant, and I just want you to know that all of the support I received here at DU has made a huge difference. I received such good advice here. Thank you.

"It's not about you."

You were right. It's not about what I "should" do or what I'm "supposed" to do, but what my parents want, need and desire. That advice helped me to listen, rather than talk. So we (my sisters and I) are reacting to what the needs are, and not imposing ourselves.

This was initially posted in the lounge, but to be honest I can't recall where I received the advice that made a huge difference; I believe it might have been GD.

Thank you, whoever told me that.

You were right; and this was the most selfless, and helpful, advice I received.

3. Good luck with the SC Transplant!
It's a terrible thing to know that a loved one has been given their 'shelf life' date - I felt the same way when my Dad was diagnosed with bone cancer. A lot of DU folks were so kind with their thoughts and wishes and that sure meant the world to me.

All of us kids met with him and he told us how he wanted to live out his last months and that while he might get beat medically, he'd do it on his terms. We all listened and took our marching orders from him and helped make his last months as fun, pain-free and upbeat as possible. Our focus was on him and quality of HIS life and not on how it affected us - we saved that for our private time and private conversations.

I hope the best for you and your family and that the stem cell transplant is a raving success. I'm happy for anyone that has a glimmer of hope from medical treatments and that includes you and your family. :grouphug:

4. You're welcome .........
All you needed was someone to adjust your priorities, something you couldn't do while you were scared. None of us can. Being scared jumbled everything.

Once you stopped being scared, you were able to understand what I showed you.

I hope your Dad and Mom are doing well, and, you know, you're doing well, too. That's good.

Keep posting here, with updates, please..............................

5. I don't know who gave you that advice, but that philosophy really helped me a lot through my parents
illnesses, especially my Mother's pancreatic cancer. Good luck and hang in there.
