Me too, homeless person
Time's picture of the week

Generosity
Appearing at a San Francisco soup kitchen, the Dalai Lama spoke of his position as Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, saying "Me too, homeless person."

3. I'm guessing he's not sleeping under a bridge, though.
If he's exposed to the four seasons, it's the Four Seasons Hotel.

Still, he's doing a nice thing, setting a good example.

8. It is a good thing he's doing...
But yeah, as far as homeless people go, he's probably the richest one there ever was.

13. When was the last time you helped out at a soup kitchen?
If it ain't been lately, then STFU.

18. Two weeks ago.
And I didn't hand out food and smile for the camera, I washed floors and scrubbed pots. It's something I do every two weeks, or more frequently if someone else on the list doesn't show up.

So STFU, yourself. Grab a tweezers and get that hair outta your ass.

21. You mean "When was the last time you staged a photo op while helping out at a soup kitchen?"
Edited on Fri May-08-09 07:31 AM by Orrex
It's super-duper that the veal-eating CIA-paid Dalai Lama decided to pitch in, but it's absolutely no more impressive than any other celebrity doing the same.

15. look into those eyes...
He is giving more than a plate of food. Compassion. We all can benefit giving a little compassion. At some point you may be in need of some, and it will come back to you.

19. And we also need to learn to be less judgmental.
What, precisely, did I say that wasn't TRUE? Why do you ascribe motive to me (to say nothing of a "need" for compassion) for stating a simple and inocuous fact? Unless I'm mistaken, and the guy is in fact sleeping under a bridge? Why do you, not knowing me, assume the worst, as though you believe I wish the guy ill?

25. He hasn't been uncomfortable for most of his life.
That was my only point.

I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you on this subject, though.

Just not worth the time or effort.

27. No contest...but I get the feeling he truly appreciates
what he has as a result of the discomfort he has experienced, minute as it may seem to some.

The nature of human suffering is an interesting subject to me. I tend to feel very fortunate, because as much as my life may suck, I can always manage to find someone, with more or less material wealth, whose life sucks more.

Then there's the paradox of the guy who seemingly has vast wealth, but has to work so hard to build and maintain his fortune that he's never able to appreciate it, or alienates himself from his family as a result of his greedy fixation. Compare him to the guy with relatively little, who struggles financially, but contents himself with the fact that he has less to lose than many.

Sorry to ramble...Like I say, it's just interesting to me.

5. There's 2 types of homeless: homeless on the street (or under
the freeway overpass), and homeless, not on the street.

14. home is usually more than a structure
Edited on Thu May-07-09 11:18 PM by handmade34
it is a place of refuge, comfort, a niche, base of operations, a native place, home court,
"to the heart", "it struck home"....

The Dalai Lama has been exiled from his home: He probably sleeps in a comfortable bed at night, but it is not home. It is terribly disconcerting that people in this country sleep in the streets or under bridges and I would never diminish the travesty of that. I am not able to live in the place I call home and I am thousands of miles away from all the people I care about dearly. I sleep in a comfortable bed at night, but would sleep on the floor the rest of my life to be home.
