****TO ANYONE WHO HAS RECEIVED A ROBOCALL ABOUT PHONY EXPIRING CAR WARRANTIES***
Edited on Fri May-15-09 10:59 PM by armyowalgreens
You know what I'm talking about. It's 9 PM and you get a call from another state. You pick it up and its another one of those annoying as hell calls about a non-existent warranty on your car that's about to expire. I usually don't pick it up in time and then I have to listen to the message without being able to tell them to take me off their call list.

Well now we will have our vengeance...

"NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Federal Trade Commission is attempting to shut down three companies that the agency alleges have bombarded millions of consumers since 2007 with deceptive "robocalls" to sell them phony extensions to their original vehicle warranties.

The FTC filed two lawsuits in federal courts Thursday against Florida-based Voice Touch Inc., Illinois-based Network Foundations LLC and Florida-based Transcontinental Warranty Inc.

Consumers who answered the pre-recorded calls hear a message telling them that their original vehicle warranty is about to expire and that they should "extend coverage before it is too late."

The companies then try to sell a false service contract for between $2,000 and $3,000, which is portrayed as an extension of the vehicle's original warranty.

FTC spokesman Peter Kaplan said the agency became aware of these calls in 2007. Since then, the companies have already made more than 1 billion unsolicited calls and allegedly have raked in more than $10 million on the sale of these deceptively marketed service contracts, the agency said.

"This is one of the most aggressive telemarketing schemes the FTC has ever encountered," chairman Jon Leibowitz said in a statement.

"I'm not sure which is worse, the abusive telemarketing tactics of these companies or the way they try to deceive people once they get them on the phone," Leibowitz said. "Either way, we intend to shut them down."

The FTC said these unsuspecting consumers, including those on the federal Do Not Call registry, received these robocalls at home, work and on their cell phones. Businesses, government offices and even 911 dispatchers have also been subjected to the calls, the agency said.

Consumers who asked that the calls be stopped often were met with "abusive behavior" or were simply hung up on, the agency said.

The agency said in its lawsuits that the companies "deceptive practices" violated the FTC Act and the agency's Telemarketing Sales Rule by calling consumers whose numbers were on the national Do Not Call Registry.

The FTC has asked for temporary restraining orders to halt the illegal robocalls and said it will seek financial compensation from the companies that can be used to pay back victims of the scam.

A Network Foundations Inc. spokesperson, who did not want to be named, said the FTC's lawsuit against his company "is a misunderstanding."

"We are a hosting company. We have nothing to do with call centers and we are going to court today to state our case," the person said.

Voice Touch Inc. and Transcontinental Warranty Inc. could not be reached for comment.

Beginning Sept. 1, marketers won't be allowed to make robocalls to consumers unless they opt to receive these calls, said Kaplan.

"Obviously if you are already on the Do Not Call registry, you should not be getting robocalls from commercial marketers," he said.

Regarding the effectiveness of the Do Not Call registry, which the Federal Communications Commission created six years ago, Kaplan said it's still an effective mechanism that protects consumers against unsolicited calls from marketers.

"Most telemarketers are abiding by the rules," Kaplan said. "Those that don't will be brought enforcement against."

And thanks to a brilliant little thing called Google, I found Transcontinental Warranty Inc.

Here's their email address: customercare@tawarranty.com

and fax: 354-776-3367

and mail address: Transcontinental Warranty, Inc.

I think it's about time they got a taste of their own medicine

1. I love those calls
my car is 12 years old - the warranty expired 9 years ago. I always hit the button to talk to someone so that I can inform them that the number is on the Do Not Call list and I will be reporting the violation. Then they hang up on me.

9. I don't even have a drivers licence.
But I do have non-drivers ID. Which says to me that MV is selling my name. Because that's when it started.

19. Not me
I push the button and burp.

Then I hang up.

Robocallers aren't going to respect requests not to call.

I like your method of dealing with them.

23. They stopped coming a little over a week ago
I think the lawsuits started and the scumbags closed up shop.

They'll come up with another scam soon, based out of another state.

10. If I were smart enough to invent it, I'd prolly call it the...
fuck off and die button. But then, I am getting cranky in my old age. Those calls really piss me off. Some days, it's hard to get to the phone.

13. I hate the phone,
I'm on the Do Not Call registry, and those calls ended back when I had a nice long conversation with one of the people trying to sell me a warranty on my car.

I played dumb, didn't know I needed a warranty, and kept the woman on the line for about twenty minutes.

This is what happens when I'm bored.

We talked about EVERYTHING, because she was so nice, and I was SO grateful that she was going to help me, and, well, we were like GIRLFRIENDS!!!

Then, she asked my name.

And I asked her how she knew I needed a car warranty if she didn't even know my name.

Hung up on me, and the calls stopped. That was at least six months ago, and now they're starting again, but they're coming in on Caller ID as "Private Name, Private Number," and they hang up as soon as the answering machine clicks on.

Annoying as shit ........................

27. God, that's a good one. I wish I had your patience, cause I'd
like to do that too. Ever since I got caller ID I just let it ring and ring. Seems to me it's almost worse than it was before we even had the "do not call" list, but maybe not. I think ID shows "private name, etc" because the first thing they want on a complaint form is the abuser's phone number, and they just aren't giving you that anymore. If they give you a number it's phony. Caller ID has been a lifesaver for me.

But I get super angry. And I usually take it out on whatever sorry operator picks up my line.

I'm about to email the angriest letter I think I have ever written.

8. we've gotten them on our cell, our FAX(???), and our regular landline
I'm sick of these damned things.

Are they tied in with that company that is deluging the TV with warranty offers? Yeah, I'm gonna start giving money to an insurance company so they can dictate where I take my car to be fixed. Wonder if they will work in *pre-existing conditions* on older cars - to keep from paying for new parts? :sarcasm:

11. I have, and I'm in Canada.
Everyone here is getting them too. It's quite legal, just stupid, unnecessary and expensive.

We were told to ignore them. So I have.

Which is just as well, because I don't have a warranty.

That POS hasn't had a warranty for like a decade. It's falling apart. I have no money for a warranty anyway.

If they think they are fooling me, they must be out of their god damn minds.

resend fax after fax after fax to one number? I'd like to fax them a solid black sheet of paper, over and over, and run them out of toner.

16. These calls are annoying as $*%
I get them at home, I get them on the cell. What a freaking nuisance!

My husband (European) says such calls are unheard of in the Old Country and can't even fathom them being allowed here.

my 2 year old grand daughter loves to "talk" on the phone. When they call, he says nothing, and hands the phone to her, she just babbles away.

I just got them on my cell -which I rare use except for family stuff. It was sort of funny since both of our cars are over 10 years old. Warranty is long gone.

I wish I had a warranty when my 13 year old BMW blew up over New Years.

who even opens that shit? The phone rings, I answer. Captive audience, for a few seconds at least.

Thing is, enough people must respond and do something that gives them money or they wouldn't be doing it.
