GOP Tactics Invite Torture Probe

By Craig Crawford | May 15, 2009 6:00 AM

Republicans who are dragging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi into the torture debate are, perhaps unwittingly, encouraging Democrats to defend her with a full investigation of the Bush White House -- unless, of course, she does have something to hide.

Arguing that Pelosi and other Democrats were somehow complicit in "enhanced interrogation" policies gives the impression that those making the charges think that the policy was wrong, and that the wrongdoers must now be clearly indentified. But most Republicans don't seem to agree with either point. Careful what you ask for.

Democratic leaders, starting with President Barack Obama, had seemed content to let sleeping dogs lie and go easy with any Capitol Hill probes. But the GOP counter-offensive claiming that Pelosi knew about torture practices opens the door to a full investigation to settle the matter -- if for no other reason, so that the Speaker can defend herself.

Republicans cannot legitimately complain about an investigation if they are going to hurl accusations that must be examined.

Bring it on.

1. Hopefull
But cynical, from what I have seen/heard no one really wants to go anywhere with a real investigation. They are all posturing as if they want the right thing for the country but they seem to have mixed things up a bit between which is country, which is party and which is personal. Looks to me like a lot of red herrings being thrown out there in a somewhat obvious attempt to muddy the waters.

2. At this point, I don't see how an investigation can be avoided.
Too many unanswered questions, too much curiosity.

3. I agree
For us normals it seems inevitable, but we are talking about federal government here, and I am a cynic where they are concerned. I keep hearing "truth commission" if that happens it is all over they will bury it so deep and so long that we will never hear the truth of the case. We already know what it is, hell dick head has confessed on global TV, there really is no doubt that national and international laws were broken nor is there any doubt about who did it. So trials should be underway already, if not here then at an international level.
