Regarding Timothy Killeen's letter Sunday, asserting that waterboarding is "now outlawed":

Despite what ideological lawyers working for the Bush administration dreamed up, waterboarding is torture and has been outlawed for many years by U.S. law and the Geneva Convention.

In World War II, we prosecuted a Japanese officer for waterboarding and sentenced him to 15 years of hard labor. During Vietnam, one of our own soldiers faced a court-martial when a photo of him waterboarding was printed in a newspaper.

We can debate whether torture accomplishes anything, which intelligence experts dispute, but that's really not the point. We have laws and standards, so what the Bush administration did was a war crime, and it is indefensible.

I wonder if we'll ever see Dick Cheney, who obviously endorsed this torture program, in a cell.
