ACLU Director: Obama's Commitment To Constitution A Welcome Break From Past
but . . .

New Indefinite Detention Proposal Nevertheless Troubling

NEW YORK – The following can be attributed to Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, in response to President Obama's national security speech today:

"We welcome President Obama's stated commitment to the Constitution, the rule of law and the unequivocal rejection of torture. But unlike the president, we believe that continuing with the failed military commissions and creating a new system of indefinite detention without charge is inconsistent with the values that he expressed so eloquently at the National Archives today."

3. I don't think the ACLU really expects a good result from Obama policy
. . . on these issues.

8. the title is from the ACLU news page
I took it as a gesture by the director of organization to lead with his positive view of the president's address and then follow with his reservations.

12. It was a short statement
But, I think you'll find that most criticisms of the speech begin with praise for the sentiments and principles expressed and follow with criticism. I think the title reflects that There is plenty in the speech which pulls the policy back from the constitutional precipice. That shouldn't go unremarked on. I can imagine a similar criticism from the opposite perspective wondering why the praise was buried in the text and not reflected in the title. Too much made of it, imho.

9. Well said and the check will be in the mail tomorrow
I want the ACLU to be the strong dissenting voice it always has been and continues to be to this day.

10. It too bad this won't get the coverage that the "tense" meeting
before the speech got.

Wait.. same guy was there too? Maybe it wasn't such an angry meeting after all.
