N.M. cops: Mom confesses to suffocating boy
They say 23-year-old smothered him, revived him, then killed him

"ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Police said Thursday that the mother of a 3-year-old boy found buried at a playground told investigators she suffocated him, had second thoughts and brought him back to life, then changed her mind and suffocated him again.

Police Chief Ray Schultz said Tiffany Toribio, 23, told officers that she and her son, Tyruss "Ty" Toribio, were in Alvarado Park before dawn on May 13 and that she suffocated him while he was asleep.

She told detectives she had second thoughts and performed CPR on the boy, reviving him, but again reconsidered and placed her hand over his nose and mouth until he suffocated, Schultz said. She said she waited a few minutes before burying him in the playground, the chief said..."

4. Why do people do this?

Why not just put the child up for adoption? I would have taken him! Jesus!

and there's been as little background on why she thought it was a good idea to kill her child. It would be helpful to us to wrap our heads around this one if we knew the circumstances; mental illness, alcohol, drugs, homelessness, hostile new boyfriend, whatever. He looked like a well cared for little boy until whatever it was came to a head.

Zia Pueblo has taken an unprecedented step and opened the graveside services for the little boy to the public since there was such a great deal of public support in identifying him and raising money for the funeral.

I hope everybody connected with this can manage to heal. I hope learning about the circumstances helps us prevent such horrors in the future.

"For a mother to kill her own child is unfathomable. Most people can't even imagine how you could even think about doing something like that," said Cmdr. Michael Geier. "We'll never really understand why that happened, but we now understand the dynamics of what led up to that."

Toribio was homeless and sleeping in the park, having been kicked out of her mother's home and a friend's apartment in the days before her son's death because she was ignoring the boy and withholding affection, investigators said.

"What makes this story especially sad was when asked the reason why she took Ty's life, Tiffany said that she did not want him to grow up with no one caring about him the same way that she had grown up with no one caring about her," said Police Chief Ray Schultz, his eyes watery and his voice thick with emotion."

I assumed it was hard times... people are doing desperate things...
