Green Day's 'GMA' Shocker
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-P7y5c-aCc

Yesterday, Green Day made headlines by bashing mega-retailer Wal-Mart for not selling their new album, '21st Century Breakdown' after the band refused to edit it to meet their so-called 'family friendly' standards. Today, they're making headlines after ABC forgot to bleep expletives from their 'Good Morning America' performance. Oops.

Yeah, someone at ABC fell asleep at the switch, allowing the 'S' word and the 'F' bomb to sneak past censors during their breakthrough classic, 'Longview,' as the teeming crowd sang along in Central Park.

Just a month ago, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong complained that 'American Idol' producers forced them to play their cover of John Lennon's 'Working Class Hero' to an empty room for fear that they might blurt a 'F' bomb on live tv. Armstrong told Spinner.com, "We almost got thrown off the show before it even started because they didn't trust us," he said. "It's like, 'Man, we've done this so many times. We can do this.' And finally they're like, 'OK, you guys have to record it before.' So we played to a completely empty room."

Maybe ABC's people should've talked to the folks over at 'Idol.'

1. Green Day was on American Idol?
Why?

It's pretty obvious they've sold out.

3. "Sold out?" Not this shit again.
Green Day is an amazingly successful commercial band. They have broad appeal, and that appeal crosses lots of demographic lines.

Shock of all shocks -- they appeal to people who (get ready for it) like popular music. Holy crapoli! Whudda thunk it!

6. And they're not "American Idiots", they have a message in a lot of their music
And if going on the circus that is AI (I remember when that used to mean Artificial Intelligence) gets the message spread farther then so be it.

7. I can handle a typical commercial sell out
Most bands I like eventually made lots of money. I don't blame Green Day for signing to a label.

But American Idol? It's one step above a small county talent show. Green Day just doesn't fit.

9. I try not to second guess.
American Idol. Yeah, I don't watch.

Saturday Night Live -- works for me.

13. OMG no. Hadn't heard that one.
And I really don't need to hear it again ever. Used to like it. Had to play it A LOT when I worked in radio. That one and "Free bird" are a little worn out for me.

14. I never really understood any of the "Green Day selling out" stuff
It's not like they changed their music, they were putting out pop-punk treacle from day one back at Gilman and the co-op parties (showing my age here).

Good pop-punk, if you like that sort of thing, which apparently a lot did/do. But "sell out"?

10. Buy "21st Century Breakdown" at Target
It has a bonus disc with more songs.

Haven't got it yet, but will soon.

19. They had some copies with the bonus disc and some without.
There's a label on the front. It turns out that the bonus disc is 6 live tracks from the "American Idiot" tour in Japan.

15. Nice! I'll have to look for a copy of this...
I have a sick fascination with stuff getting by the censors - bad language, upskirts on Colbert, whatever else I can find.
