U.S. attorney says business could help cut murder rate, hire teens as interns

May 22, 2009

BY NATASHA KORECKI Federal Courts Reporter nkorecki@suntimes.com

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald stood before a room packed with business officials Thursday and asked them to do something they probably have never considered:

Hire felons.

Not exactly the kind of request you'd expect from the area's top federal law enforcement official, who's better known for locking up criminals.

But Fitzgerald told the audience that while law enforcement targets the worst of the worst, the community needs to get more involved -- especially the business community -- to help drive down murder numbers and keep kids out of gangs.

1. K & R
Of course, I'm sure we're going to hear the howls of outrage against Patrick Fitzgerald in 3...2...1.

I'll be interested to see what the reaction to this speech is in Chicago.

2. Makes sense to me.
Sometimes giving someone some responsibility will make all the difference.

Several years ago, we were planning a family vacation. I was really worried about leaving the house because of a group of teens who were known to cause trouble in the neighborhood. I ended up "hiring" the one I worried about the most to keep an eye out for us.

I told him that I was depending on him to make sure nothing happened. He seemed flattered that I would trust him to do that.

4. Tried. Sensitive government site refused him.
Aside, one must be born here, not naturalized for entry.

Not only should we decriminalize personal drug use, we should lower the sentences across the board for a lot of still incarcerated persons.

TV actor playing Tim the Toolman Taylor would have been in jail for life under current laws. That's what we should do with that fine man?

I don't think so.

I think we should take people like my right-wing brother who thinks Tim the Toolman is great and wants more draconian sentences and rub his mean little RW nose into its own asinine self-righteous stupidity.

5. Isn't that the blueprint for a Repug administration?
