Where is Congressional and Senate support for President Obama? (Action thread)
Yesterday, I was so moved by what President Obama tried to do. He tried to lay out the real problems he and his administration are walking through regarding closing Guantanamo, regarding due process for Bush's victims there and regarding what his policy would be going forward.

And I am so incredibly pissed at House and Senate Democrats for running away from him on this set of problems. How dare they run for cover at this crucial time.

If we want Obama to come to good decisions about Gitmo, about tribunals, about detentions, first we need to see to it that he has the support he needs from his party. Could I ask you to work with me to get Obama some support from the Democrats? The last time any of us tried to solve a really hard problem, our success depended in part on the amount of support we had. Obama is no different. And these Congressional and Senate Democrats need to back him so well that Cheney and all he represents become impossible.

Do you think you can find a minute to email, call or write your Senators and House rep and ask them: what the hell are you doing to support President Obama's plan to close Gitmo? That question doesn't cover all of the details we might care about but, it points the way.

I strongly disagree with some of the proposals Obama put out yesterday. But it seems to me, his plan can only be as good as the support he has to develop a good plan. And, he can't do that and juggle Cheney and the whole right wing nuttery and the mass media without the clear and consistent backing of his party. The rumors of his super powers are rumors, you know.

What say you, DU?

If you agree with me and contact your reps, let us know how it went in this thread.

Thanks.

8. Good. This Gitmo issue is key to how much cooperation Obama gets
as far as I can tell. It's a make it or break it moment.

10. I think it's obvious that Obama wants them to slow the issue down. Look who came out to talk about

Obama needing a plan first....Dick Durbin. Is he scared his constituents won't like it....ABSOLUTELY NOT. He's one of Obama's top go-to guys in the Senate. If he's saying they want to slow down till Obama has a plan together, then he's doing so at Obama's request. Count on it.

It's called political theater. And when Obama presents a doable plan, watch key Dem senators jump to proclaim that Obama did exactly what was needed to 'get' their vote.

9. Good point. Gillebrand is in her "prove yourself" phase, if such exists for senators
She might be amenable.

Schumer... well, I'll write him. Establishment fellow through and through.
