Eternal (a Memorial Day poem)

Warrior
Rest thy weary bones
Where you fell,
Or where after you go
Your world will give you rest
Your body, alas, will fade
Fly, thee, to the sky
Or wander, in shadow
The universe now your home

Warrior
Despair not
Though you joined the ash and dust
Maybe before the task was done
Others took up your spirit
And added it to their guns
Never left behind
Never truly gone
Tempered spirits never rust

Warrior
Anger yourself no more
Peace achieved at last
Perhaps, the only way in war
The reasons you fought matter not
Your enemy now your comrade
Your souls wear no uniform

Warrior
Be not forgotten
That is our mission to do
Always you’ll be with us
Though the times we remember
Are pitifully too few
Maybe if we remembered every day
It will be war that’s finally verboten

Warrior
Be not vengeful
For the fools and bunkered Lords
Who ordered you to doom
You gave without question
Haunt us instead
It fell upon us
To stop them doing this to you

Warrior
Be now a teacher
Through the ages of time
Your sacrifice never in vain
Remind us of the cost
That will always be paid
When we send our children to fight
Help us find a better way
May your memory transform us
And bring humanity
To a kinder and better mind

Warrior
Take your glory
Earned so hard and well
Always honored and remembered
Despite the cause, always focused
Crying in mighty voice
Rushing the very Gates of Hell
It was a good day to die
If there is such a thing
But your blood will be honored
Sleep well Warrior
Eternal
