So where are all the economic stimulus jobs?
Does anyone know of anyone who is back to work as a result of the stimulus bill?

China, in particular, has a lot of unspent dollars they're spending on real stuff like infrastructure, oil and mineral rights around the world, before the dollar collapses.

so if you know anyone who does construction, I would ask them. Also, the deal with the stim projects is that they had to start within 90-120 days of approval. I don't think we have hit that deadline yet.

18. Our state just finished the process of awarding some stimulus money.
The overriding criteria seemed to be shovel-ready projects. So it took time to award the money because cities had to apply, evaluations and due diligence had to take place. Most of the projects have to start by Feb 2010.

But it is many millions for the cities. They have to pay prevailing wages and buy American products for their projects. And not just "assembled" in the US products.

Slow but it is progress.

26. Give it fucking time!
It's gonna take some time to start shit up. For the green jobs, a lot of the industry actually has to be built first. For other stuff, you need some start up time. Obama's only been in office for 4 months and the stimulus has been out there only for half that time. Bureaucracies take time to get the checks out there.

I've worked in public education for 25 years, in two states a thousand miles apart; the scope of wide spread RIFs is beyond anything I've ever seen.

41 in my SMALL district alone. And, since all the other districts in the state are doing the same, there are no "other" teaching jobs to be had.

49. We spent the first round
keeping schools open as long as possible. We cut 3 days off the year and reduced the entire district's salary to do so; stimulus dollars couldn't do it without cutting days and cutting pay, and now the first round is spent.

The second round won't be for keeping jobs; there are more strings attached. Those dollars are only available to those districts willing to move the Obama/Duncan "reform" plan forward. A plan that this educator firmly opposes. Since there aren't too many districts that will be able to turn money down, as far as I can see, we're screwed there as well.

As for next year? Stimulus money isn't saving jobs here. We're going to take ANOTHER pay cut; somewhere in the range of 2.5-5% over and above what we already took. We may not know how bad the cut is until we come back next year. We're going to a 4 day week. My students will receive 144 fewer instructional hours next year. I will work 4 10 hour days, be responsible for teaching more subjects, and lose my prep period.

We're losing our counselor. We've lost our PE and Music teachers (the 2 extra subjects we will have to teach next year.)

We cut sports programs at the middle school, we made massive cuts in classes offered at the high school.

50. Large projects take time to filter down.
This was my problem with the stimulus - it depends on the same old watering down network of contractors, subcontractor, sub-subcontractors, etc. Everybody takes their cut until the guy at the bottom actually doing the work is left with hardly anything. And, since he works for a contractor wanting to pay the least for labor, there's a good chance part of his pay gets sent back home to the family in Guatamala anyway.
For real infrastructure stimulus, we need the proven WPA, CCC, etc.-the organizations that skipped the middle-man contractors and went straight to the people.

51. The economic stimulus will create few new jobs.
Based on the way the money is being doled out, it is mostly being used to keep currently employed people employed. Most of the stimulus projects that I've seen listed were already started but on the verge of being shut down. Stimulus money is keeping those projects going, but doesn't help the already unemployed.

A stimulus that keeps the problem from getting worse is admirable too.

52. Teachers, cops, firemen, social workers who WERE NOT LAID OFF
The saddest part of watching the public evaluate the Obama administration is seeing that many can't understand what HASN'T happened because of the stimulus and even bailout.

There obviously are lots of projects that haven't begun.

But the very first effect of the stimulus was simply plugging state and local budget holes as local tax revenues plummet.

NPR has had several reports about cities and towns that have AVOIDED laying off people because of stimulus money.

But of course, since you can't see what would have happened if the package had not passed, the administration doesn't get credit for it.

But trust me, tends of thousands of public sector jobs have already been saved, which in turn through the multiplier effect, has prevented hundreds of thousands of private sector jobs from being eliminated.

The new administration could have emulated the New Deal and put masses to work on the government's dime, instant relief, money put right back into the economy. Instead money is given to bankers. Instead we get a version of trickle down. WTF is 'progressive about this? Herbert Hoover mighta done more.

Unemployment is 12.5% in this county, 20.2% in an adjacent county. And those are the official, low-ball numbers. The priorities of this administration are abysmal.
