Breaking: Sotomayor's fondness for Puerto Rican cuisine is a handicap for higher office
Parody?

Are The Hill -- and anti-Sotomayor operative Curt Levey -- really suggesting that the judge's fondness for Puerto Rican cuisine is a handicap for higher office:
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/critics-focus-on-sotomayor-speech-in-la-raza-journal-2009-05-27.html

Sotomayor also claimed: "For me, a very special part of my being Latina is the mucho platos de arroz, gandoles y pernir -- rice, beans and pork -- that I have eaten at countless family holidays and special events."

This has prompted some Republicans to muse privately about whether Sotomayor is suggesting that distinctive Puerto Rican cuisine such as patitas de cerdo con garbanzo -- pigs' tongue and ears -- would somehow, in some small way influence her verdicts from the bench.

Curt Levey, the executive director of the Committee for Justice, a conservative-leaning advocacy group, said he wasn't certain whether Sotomayor had claimed her palate would color her view of legal facts but he said that President Obama's Supreme Court nominee clearly touts her subjective approach to the law.

"It's pretty disturbing," said Levey. "It's one thing to say that occasionally a judge will despite his or her best efforts to be impartial ... allow occasional biases to cloud impartiality.

2. That "pernir" in the article is actually pernil - roast pork. I am not
Puerto Rican, but an old American mutt, plus recent German immigrants, and I love Puerto Rican food, some of the most savory complex cooking in the world. It is wonderful stuff.
Mr. Levey, you are an asshole, but then you already knew that...

3. they're missing Bolton's point
no one is specifically objecting to the cuisine part of the speech, but Bolton makes a very good point that the speech included that part, and so says something about what the speech was about.

5. What do conservatives eat?
Don't they ever eat any ethnic foods? What boring people!

I guess if I grab Chinese on the way home I'm a "red commie" or if I get Korean then I am part of the "axis of evil". Not to mention that little Cuban restaurant I like!

And how about some good old southern chicken and dumplings like my grandma made, yummy, doesn't make me vote for that very regional, southern party.

6. "Patitas de cerdo con garbanzo" is
actually pigs feet with chick peas. No tongue or ears.

I wonder if Alito or Scalia ever eat spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna or any other ethnic Italian dish. And if they do, should I be worried?

What about Justice Ginsberg? Does she like knishes or lox?

How much do we need to think how these ethnic foods influence their decisions?

Hmmmm...

21. Parody. Where's the Mofongo?

If it was real, it would mention mofongo.

It's kind of a mashed plantain thing with I-don't-know-what in it, but it makes a great chicken stuffing.
