Episcopal Church Ousts 61 Central Calif. Clergy
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ―

National leaders of the Episcopal Church have ousted 61 clergy who aligned with a former bishop from the Diocese of San Joaquin who sought to break with the national church.

Bishop John-David Schofield led his congregation to become the first full diocese to secede from the U.S. denomination in 2007 in a fight over the Bible and homosexuality.

Schofield was later removed as head of the diocese and barred from performing any religious rites. He maintains he is an Anglican bishop under the worldwide church.

1. It's clear that gay rights is becoming the civil rights issue of this generation
And the Democratic party must, like we eventually did on civil rights, get on the right side of history.

2. Oh, they'll come around...when the people lead, the leaders will follow...
...expect more to come around as the tide of popular opinion turns and they deem it politically safe to support gay rights. Cowards.

3. "A politician is a person who finds which way the parade is going,
jumps in the front and tells everyone he is leading." can't remember who told me that one.

4. The priests who were ousted
aren't against gay marriage because it's unpopular.

They are against it because they are conservatives who have fought the church over women priests too.

The Episcopal Church is on the right (good) side of this.

BTW, I know only one Episcopal priest in California, and he is gay. His parish loves him and I'm pretty sure his partner came with him to the wedding reception.

6. They better count the money - last priest who broke off over gay rights
seems to have been spending the parish money as though it was his own - and used the gay rights issue to leave the church hoping he wouldn't get caught.

7. After watching a half-season marathon of "The Tudors,"
I'm relieved that the church leadership no longer treats heretics the way they did in Henry VIII's day.
