All I keep seeing being parroted around is that she has on several occasions ruled in favor of pro-life groups. I just want to know that we're not staring down any sort of threat to Roe V. Wade here.

1. Here is what BeliefNet said:
Is Sotomayor An Abortion Centrist?
Tuesday May 26, 2009
One has to assume Obama wouldn't have appointed Sonia Sotomayor without some indication that she's pro-choice but -- based on very, very little information -- I wonder if she might not end up being an abortion centrist.

First, in Center for Reproductive Law and Policy v. Bush, she actually ruled against the pro-choice group on Constitutional grounds.

Second, in Amnesty America v. Town of West Hartford, she ruled in favor of the rights of anti-abortion protestors.

Neither of these cases dealt with the merits of abortion. Nonetheless, it's interesting that in the two cases we know of that related partly to abortion, she took the position that pro-life groups would have wanted (albeit for reasons unrelated to Roe v. Wade). At a minimum, these cases would seem to indicate that, if she is pro-choice, she didn't let those views affect her view of the relevant law.

2. She hasn't ruled in favor of anti-choice groups.
There is only one case in which she dealt with abortion on any level.

Don't have the link, but it has to with a pro-choice group who sued the Poppy Bush administration because he didn't want to give money to family planning organizations OVERSEAS who offered abortion.

Her opinion was that that was the perogative of the administration to decide how federal aid dollars were distributed.

Not really a "choice" issue, more an issue of executive authority.

Planned Parenthood is ecsatic over her nomination and released a press release yesterday saying so.
Don't think that PP is in the habit of endorsing anti-choicers.

3. I haven't seen NARAL nor PP give any solid pro-choice decisions she has ruled for
as a backup of their support. It seems like their support is blind at best and at worst just because she is a female.

As for myself, I just want to see these decisions in favor of pro-choice positions so I can rest assured that a Woman's Right to Choose is not endangered by inevitable challenges by the right.

5. Well you aren't going to see any "decisions in favor of pro-choice" because

they don't exist.

She's never adjudicated any.

She sits on the 2nd Circuit -- blue country -- and no cases came before her dealing with the issue.

4. PFAW, Feminist.org, Emilys List, Moveon
All I've gotten are positive emails on her nomination. The only place I've seen anything negative is Rachel Maddow and DU. Weird. She's a judge. I'm thrilled. I think Obama is trying desperately to return us to "normalcy", where Congress made the laws, and the courts ruled on civil rights, and the people advocated for their beliefs with trampling the rights of others.
