Sorry DUers, but here's the problem with your "pet cause"
Your pet cause is a distraction. It's not like what I believe in. I believe we need to unify as a party to save this country... and my issues, the core Democratic issues, are what's going to do that for us. We have to take the moral and political high ground, not get sidetracked by your issues, which are pet issues, speaking only to your narrow nichy little special interests.

Your pet cause is going to cost us votes. Your pet issues are going to hand the Senate back over to the Republicans by the end of next week. Your pet fringe sell-out DINO extremism is divisive to our party. You need to shut up and wait your turn and start acting like a real Democrat, or perhaps act more pragmatically. Whichever. The point is that what I believe is more important than what you believe because this is a democracy and we have to stand up for our values, or perhaps be more pragmactic about how we achieve them. So quit being divisive and start thinking more like me. Otherwise you're tearing us apart, or perhaps selling out to the man.

RIGHT FUCKING NOW!!

18. Thank you.
I was going for a tabula rasa thing. I just think it's goofy how so many DUers try to marginalize each other. Hopefully you could plug any pair of issues, from civil rights to antiwar to veganism to environmentalism to marriage equality into either slot on this bogus divide.

We're a Madisonian democracy--the Democratic party by its very nature is divided adn self divisive, we only success when we stick together despite how "fringy" our fellow Dems might seem from time to time. We'll always struggle between the extremes of being too unfocused to be effective and being too disciplined to be tolerant of dissent.

I just like to step back and look at the process sometimes. We're damn fascinating, that way.

69. You warm the cockles of my heart, sir; that is one of my favourite appelations.
I have, recently, managed to intrigue my students with that most meet of epithets; given that those infant terribles had the term sussurated in their general direction more than once, their interest was perhaps no surprise. Still, most gratifying to hear them use it in a sentence!

(And if you don't think I hauled out the thesaurus for one of those, you should definitely reconsider - I only wish sussurate was truly part of my everyday parlance. )

75. Nope - though as an idiom it doesn't make a lot of sense!
It is heart - as in something making you feel happy . . . found the following as an explanation:

http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-coc2.htm

(Q)From Craig Bodhi: I’m curious about the idiom warm the cockles of your heart.

(A) It’s one of the more lovely idioms in the language, isn’t it? Something that warms the cockles of one’s heart induces a glow of pleasure, sympathy, affection, or some such similar emotion. What gets warmed is the innermost part of one’s being. It’s not that surprising that it should be associated with the heart, that being the presumed seat of the emotions for most people. But what are the cockles?

We’re not sure. We do know that the expression turns up first in the middle of the seventeenth century, and that the earliest form of the idiom was rejoice the cockles of one’s heart.

Cockles are a type of bivalve mollusc, once a staple part of the diet for many British people (you may recall that Sweet Molly Malone once wheeled her wheelbarrow through Dublin’s fair city, crying “cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh!”). They are frequently heart-shaped (their formal zoological genus was at one time Cardium, of the heart), with ribbed shells.

It may be that the shape and spiral ribbing of the ventricles of the heart reminded surgeons of the two valves of the cockle. But I can’t find an example of the word cockle being applied to the heart outside this expression, which makes me suspicious of this explanation. It may be that the shape of the cockleshell, suggesting the heart as it so obviously does, gave rise to cockles of the heart as an expansion.

After this piece appeared in the Newsletter, James Woodfield pointed out that there is another possible explanation. In medieval Latin, the ventricles of the heart were at times called cochleae cordis, where the second word is an inflected form of cor, heart. Those unversed in Latin could have misinterpreted cochleae as cockles, or it might have started out as a university in-joke. Oddly, cochlea in Latin is the word for a snail (from the shape of the ventricles — it’s also the name given to the spiral cavity of the inner ear), so if this story is right we should really be speaking of warming the snails of one’s heart.

40. Wait. DU has a problem with pet issues?
I don't have any pets, myself, although I used to have a couple cats. They were brothers from the same litter and lived to be very old but then they couldn't move around any more and I had to put them down. But I'm ok with people having pets, so long as they love them and take good care of them. I love furry friends. I don't see issues people have with pets.

41. I hate to be the one to break it to you
But democracy is based on an aggregation of what you so mockingly call "pet causes."

If you don't understand that, you're playing in the wrong league.

Reasonable people refer to them as interests. When one group stops standing up for their interests, those interests will die.

If black people had given up their "pet cause" of wanting equality, they would still be unequal. If women had given up their "pet cause" of of wanting the vote, elections would still be determined by men.

Sorry, if you are inconvenienced by people defending their interests and demanding justice.

SO GROW THE FUCK UP RIGHT NOW!

60. Satire is very very very very hard to write
Very often people take it as real.

It's harder to write when you are so close to the truth.

I don't know if you remember the story that made the rounds a year or so ago where a Christian woman who had donated a kidney wanted her kidney back because the recipient had become a Wiccan and the Christian woman didn't want her kidney to go to hell.

It was a joke. About 90 percent of the people who read it thought it was real because right-wing Christians are so terminally wacky that it's almost impossible to write satire about them. People just assumed it was real.

There are so many wacky posts on DU from Obama defenders -- some paid and some volunteer -- who write from a set of talking points that come from God knows where that you have to signal when you're mocking them. A lot of their arguments are ridiculous, so you can't rely on people to figure it out.

74. I keep forgetting... we elected a new "The Man" last year.
We don't have to sell out. We just have to argue better.

80. The core Democratic issue is ridding our government of corporate special
interests.

Until we do that, we will be farting in the wind, accomplishing little to nothing of significant progressive value.

After we are done farting, we can all gather under the big pink tutu of hand wringing, traitorous, do nothing corporate Democrats, and watch the republicans take over once again.

82. my pet cause is the planet
the animals we're mass extincting and the physical Earth we're raping beyond hope and the oceans we're killing.. My pet cause is the actual physical future. It's a cause that's down near the bottom of most people's priorities so it's no harm of dividing the party! :D

I'm actually writing this to say I'm with you 100% I'm so happy we don't have to look at that slag Palin every day :puke: I might have given up completely and forever.
