all this fuss pro/con Obama's remarks re protesters, but Ioo's GREAT thread languished and sank
I kicked this one in hopes DU would take the candid and caring Ioo's post to heart and get to work to help ALL people who want to be married, not just those in California. It just went unnoticed.

Sad, because it lays out a great plan that could really work. But, no, we would rather squabble and get angry at one another. How productive... NOT.

Please read this, then get to work on YOUR elected reps to D.C. Get going on LTTE and any groups where you do your political thing.

Get to fucking work instead of on each other's nerves. Jesus Christ on a Marmite lid, do yo really want marriage equality in this democratic nation or do you just want to bicker with each other?

Take it away Ioo (and please forgive me for re-posting parts of your fantastic OP.)

...
Quickest way to defeat the Right, REPEAL DOMA.
The real battle that needs to be waged is DOMA. You see, DOMA does something that goes further than just stopping gay people from getting married, it strips gay men and women their constitutional rights under the fair faith and credit guaranteed in Article IV, Section 1.

Why is this the next battle front...

When a man and a women go to Ohio and marry, and years later move to Virginia, they are not required to get re-married. The state of Virginia accepts that if Ohio says they are married, then they are. This is with all contracts. For me and my husband, we do not get the same respect, our rights under the fair faith and credit clause is removed from us. My (now rare) CA marriage is not given the same rights as other people's CA marriage.

How does this tie it all up...
If we can get DOMA repealed the marriage battle is over, because you can go to one of the 4 states that do allow marriage and get married, and go home. It is only because of DOMA that they tell you to piss off. The Fair Faith and Credit clause is the key to getting what we want.

...

Please, can we get to work doing something PRODUCTIVE instead of fighting with each other? I want everyone to be as lucky as Ioo and his beloved husband. We can do this. The president can't. WE have to get the repeal of DOMA on his desk by letting our reps know they have to represent US.

Complain about Obama if he doesn't sign once we get the repeal of DOMA on his desk. Hell, I'll be at the head of the protest. But do OUR work first. It is OUR job. In a democracy, it doesn't work to expect that somebody will make it all better for us. In a democracy, SOMEBODY is us.

8. I agree. We push at the national level until we win. We need bold movements, not timid obfuscation.
We've had timid lobbyists and crap campaigns for 20 years now. And we've banked almost nothing--although the lobbyists we pay for have banked quite a bit.

We don't need "California back to the ballot by 2010." No. We need action against DOMA now. Just like we need singlepayer now. Just like we need out of the wars now. We get that by all of us fighting and uniting around EACH issue. By embracing EACH issue. Not by begging and not by calling legitimate struggle someone else's "pet issue."

Bold action. Demands. Connecting the dots between issues. Solidarity. Not triangulating. Not begging and pleading.

9. yep
Makes more sense that ripping each other apart. Rip DOMA (let's call it what it is: Denial of Marriage Act) apart and spread equality instead of dysfunction.
