In his column titled "Socialism, secularism suck the vitality out of society" (Comment page, May 13), Dennis Prager asks who can name any European who has done anything lately, after naming many familiar names of old in classical music, literature and other fields.

So I checked the winners of Nobel prizes over the last 15 years and found, surprise, many Europeans and others well represented.

For literature one has to go back to 1993 to find an American winner. Since then there were several from Poland and England, with France, Scandinavia and Germany in the mix.

The United States was well represented in chemistry and physics but so were Germany, France and England.
