PA newspaper runs ad calling for assassination of Obama
by Michael Morrill - May 28, 2009 - http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/5/28/736354/-UPDATED:-PA-newspaper-runs-ad-calling-for-assassination-of-Obama

The Warren Pennsylvania Times-Observer (www.timesobserver.com) published an ad on Thursday calling for the assassination of President Barack Obama.

In our conversation with the publisher, John Elchert, he indicated that his paper was sorry that the ad was published. Today, however, there is no retraction and no apology.

If you believe an apology is in order, you can contact Mr. Elchert at 814-726-1560 or jelchert@timesobserver.com

The Warren Pennsylvania Times-Observer (http://www.timesobserver.com) published an ad today calling for the assassination of President Barack Obama.

The text of the small classified ad reads, “May Obama follow in the footsteps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy!” There is no other text and it has no attribution. The ad may be viewed here http://morrillmajority.org/warrenad.pdf.

Keystone Progress called the Times-Observer for comment and got a return call from John T. Elchert, the paper’s publisher. Mr. Elchert was extremely apologetic and wanted to make it clear that the ad did not reflect the paper’s policy.

3. Probably some underpaid bored classified ad typer, on the phone and typing 8 hours a day,
who stops reading anything after the first ten minutes and just types, and probably doesn't know who McKinley and Garfield are, let alone that they were assassinated.

It's a fucking classified ad, not an editorial.

4. Viral action? You are a vector...
The apology is in order but you are only spreading the reach of the ad. This thread should be deleted.

5. No, this needs to be confronted. In the last week I heard a threat against Obama.
This is not something to be ignored!

7. ***** Here's the email I received back from Mr. Elchert:******
Thanks for sending your email regarding the personal ad that published in yesterday’s paper. We did publish a notice explaining the error in today’s paper.

First of all, my apologies that it did make it to print. The ad has been canceled and will not run again. Unfortunately, the employee that took the ad did not make the connection as to what tied those four presidents together.

Secondly, the information on the person who placed the ad with us has been turned over to the City of Warren chief of police. His protocol is that issues such as this be reported to Secret Service. I understand that has taken place. I suspect the writer of the ad will have some explaining to do in the coming days.

We do not condone such ads in any way and regret that it made it into print.

Best regards,

John T. Elchert
Publisher
