The Mets have a hot streak going.

Ryan Zimmerman continues to hit despite being on the Nationals.

Sarkozy is showing what an idiot he is by not inviting Liz to the Normandy commemoration. Here's hoping Michelle makes a ruckus for her buddy.

North Korea has not yet nuked its neighbors.

ManU lost in the Champions League final.

Georgia congressman meet with Troy Davis in prison
5/29/2009

ATLANTA (AP) -- Two Georgia congressmen will join the head of the NAACP in south Georgia to meet with an embattled death row inmate whose claim of innocence and pleas for a new trial have captured national attention.

Ben Jealous, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, along with Rep. John Lewis and Rep. Hank Johnson, will meet on Friday with Troy Anthony Davis, who is set to be executed for the 1989 murder of Savannah, Ga., police officer Mark Allen MacPhail.

Jealous is also requesting a meeting with Gov. Sonny Perdue. Since Davis' trial, seven out of nine witnesses have recanted or contradicted their testimony.

14. You know the rule to modern American Media. If it's Bad, it's NEWS.
Obama's election notwithstanding, "Good news" doesn't put asses in the seats. I found that out early in life. Americans like their tragedy and drama with lots of collateral damage.

Over at the local minimart this morning I saw something that I havent seen in quite a while. All the vehicles filling up were all small local busineses. Two general contractors, a landscaper and a local plumber. Could be a sign that things are starting.

32. a sweet little guy ...
animal abuse is just too upsetting. how people could be so cruel to animals is too horrific to contemplate. Just a few days ago, someone truly evil set a female pit on fire, here in Baltimore. Poor baby had extensive burns over most of her body, but amazingly, is expected to recover.

28. I've had periods like that, periods where I stopped
watching the news because it was bad for my mental health. Listening to music was much healthier.
If the news is dragging you down that much, if DU is bad for you, stop reading it. It won't change the world, but it may help you. As to whether our glass is half full or half empty, all I have to do is think of McCain trying to deal with all these problems and I immediately feel better. Much as I wish our Prez would move faster on DADT, or on pushing for a public option, or arresting the *ies, it's got to be better with him than with McCain.

42. I can't. But, Dick Cheney and the apologists do.
Just like I can't agree with the cats that opposed the rescue of the mouse.

Seriously, like you, I can find very little good news on the world stage now. The fact that 30,000 children a day die of malnutrition is pretty depressing. But, we can, as the Brits say, "do our bit" to make things a little better.

44. Life is Suffering...
...that is one of the four noble truths of Buddhism. Another one is 'Suffering can be overcome'

Life is hard and sometimes it is downright painful to the point of suicidal thoughts - if you let it.

There is sooooo much beauty in the world - all you have to do is open your eyes and look around you.
The man that stands up to allow an elderly woman to sit down on a bus
The woman that gives some pocket change to help a kid that is short on money to buy a Slurpee
A dog chasing a toy and racing back and tackling its owner
The smile on a grandmother when her grandkids come to visit
Two people holding hands as they walk down the street
A thunderstorm
Birds eating from a front yard feeder
Phish playing at Merriwhether Post Pavilion in August (that one may not apply to everyone)
The pictures of the black and white children (on their father's shoulders) at an Obama rally - holding the Obama sign together
(fill in more as you see fit)

45. and more still! Rep. John Lewis "committed to saving his life."
"his" to say Troy Davis' life!!

Leaders say they convinced of Davis' innocence
May 29, 2009 2:44 PM ET

http://www.walb.com/Global/story.asp?S=10445294&nav=menu37_3

JACKSON, Ga. (AP) - After meeting for nearly two hours with Troy Davis on Friday, two Georgia congressman and the president of the NAACP said they were convinced of his innocence and committed to saving his life.

Congressmen John Lewis and Hank Johnson said they plan to return to Washington to pursue other legal means to resolving Davis' case, which is currently back in the U.S. Supreme Court on appeal. NAACP President Ben Jealous said the case is now a national priority for the organization.

Davis was convicted in the 1989 slaying of Savannah, Ga., police officer Mark MacPhail but his guilt is now in question after several witnesses from his trial have changed their testimony. Supporters are calling for a new trial for Davis.

46. Tell me about it.....
I stopped watching the news on TV not because of the constant barrage of bad news and because I just can't stand it for some reason. I'd rather get my news from DU, all the MSM news stories get posted here anyways so whats the point of watching it on TV? I've been depressed by a lot of the posts here as well, I guess now I can take comfort in the fact that I'm not alone.
