Condi 2002 re: Iraq war: "save your breath, the president has already made his mind"

http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/05/29/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry5049651.shtml

Richard Haass, the author of "War Of Necessity, War Of Choice" and president of the Council on Foreign Relations said the decision to go to war with Iraq was "taken absent a serious rigorous process," on "Washington Unplugged" Friday.

In the book, Haass depicts a meeting with then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice in July of 2002 in which he asked, "are you and the president sure you want to" go to war with Saddam Hussein, "I don't think it is necessary. It will cost an awful lot."

"She said, 'save your breath,'" Haass told host Bob Schieffer. "The president has already made up his mind."

At the time, Haass was Director of Policy Planning for State Department.

Haass said the "stunning" part of the meeting was that that it happened nine months before U.S. went to war and that "no meeting had happened in which all the pros and cons of going to war had been carefully or fairly laid out."

"It was extraordinary that a decision of this magnitude could have been taken absent a serious rigorous process," he said.

1. The only thing I'm surprised about...
Edited on Fri May-29-09 03:45 PM by derby378
...is that it apparently took Haass until 2009 to inform the people of what Her Highness said about invading Iraq.

4. And she went right along with it. Even helping sell it, though she knew it hadn't been
evaluated properly. Corrupt? Incompetent? All of the above?

7. During the buildup to the war
It was obvious to me listening to the daily war dance on the news that it was going to happen no matter what, but it didn't seem to be obvious to everybody else. Perhaps they were all just pretending they believed that Bush was not bullshitting everybody about Iraq because they were afraid to try and buck the post 9/11 momentum.

So I would not be at all surprised if Condi had said that 3 or 4 months before the invasion. I am stunned that it was 9 months. I am equally stunned that nobody divulged that to the public so we could have pressured our elected representatives to prevent the war.

So many tens of thousands of people have died because of this decision.

10. If we get an FOIA done on Cheney's secret energy meetings, we'll find evidence that
it was planned before 9/11. A Democracy agenda....and all that oil, too!

13. And what would we do if we found that out?
Wring our hands, and say 'oh that is so awful.'

Why are there no consequences for the people who committed what I see as treason against this country?

9/11 was simply a momentary roadblock.

Torture was the tie that bound the two events.

You know, the piece of paper thing?

In all seriousness: Thank you for the important article, Sabra.

Bush and his cronies wanted war and killed a million people for their oil.
