So reports MSNBC .......

The stereotype is that guys like Von Brunn come from Idaho or Alabama or Texas.

This proves that stereotypes are wrong.

He hails from Maryland. And not even the deep red part of the state (yes, there are several deep red parts of the state), but from generally blue Annapolis.

1. Mmmm, a lot of those places outside Annapolis are quite conservative
I wouldn't feel safe in some of those Annapolis outskirts, that's for sure....

24. Annapolis is not exactly blue.
And anything east of here is redder than red.

You have cities like Baltimore and the DC suburbs that keep Maryland Blue but outside those areas it's just like rural Pennsylvania.

After the election I realized just how conversative and narrow minded some people here were despite it being a blue state.

I have some jobs out there and some of the stuff I heard about Obama during the election were just downright disgusting.

I do like your point thought - we should never paint states with a broad brush.

9. The true schism in this ocuntry is urban versus rural, not state vs. state. It is just
that most of the "red" states don't have much in the way of large, diverse, urban areas. So, the rubes in the sticks can cancel out the sane people in the cities.

Deep country is red, no matter if it is Texas or Alaska.

11. Apparently, he lives on the Eastern Shore
I live on the Shore and would have to say it's not "blue." There are some purple areas around here (like where I live), but it's mostly a red state mentality on the rural Shore and in rural Western Maryland too. What makes Maryland blue overall is the heavily populated Montgomery County/Baltimore-Annapolis area.

And that their area in Cali pretty much had no racism. :eyes: I couldn't believe someone would say that.

Easton is on the Eastern Shore. Very red part of the state. An active KKK Chapter there (or was, until recently).

Check with the SPLC, there's more hate groups in the north than there is in the south.., or at least more reported incidences of hate crimes

25. The Eastern shore is more like the South than the rest of Maryland
Mostly poor agricultural area, with tourist enclaves on the ocean and Chesapeake Bay.

I go over there all the time; my wife's family is from there, and a huge number of relatives live there. My wife said there were active Klan groups in some of the small towns. Her cousin lived in Easton for awhile, which is where Von Brunn lived for a long time. Most of his years in Maryland have been over there. This part of the shore has traditionally has been extremely segregated. My wife was the first to desegregate a previously all-white school as a kindergartner in 1965 in Centerville.

Socially, it is still segregated and pretty backwards.

here is an example from the Baltimore Sun.

Racial gap lingers in Somerset, groups say
Blacks missing from top jobs, ACLU, NAACP find
By Laura Smitherman | laura.smitherman@baltsun.com
May 20, 2009

Decades of racial strife have left their mark on Somerset County, the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP said Tuesday as they called on leaders of the Eastern Shore county to ensure minorities get better access to good-paying school and government jobs.

In a report, the groups noted that no African-American has ever been elected or appointed to a top job in county government, and that no African-American was employed by the county in a professional capacity in 2007, according to the latest statistics submitted to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The county's population is 42 percent African-American.

27. Hate groups and attacks in Maryland
I just wanted to point out that a few years ago I had posted several threads to DU regarding a rash of hate crimes that had taken place in the greater Baltimore area. My question at the time was why these attacks got so little coverage by the media. I stated at the time that domestic terrorists were alive and well in Maryland and some investigation into active hate groups there was warranted.

There have been a rash of unsolved hate crimes going on in the Baltimore area for some time now. The targets have been mostly synagogues and churches with predominantly black congregations. The only reason you haven't heard about them is because the MSM wasn't interested. They're only interested NOW because the current bloody conflict in the ME sells advertizing space or gets people to tune in to their latest "all war, all the time" programs.

Furthermore, where was the interest in said hate crimes when I posted no fewer than THREE THREADS on this subject earlier this year? I'll tell you what happened to them -- they sank like stones. Seems the MSM aren't the only ones who weren't interested.

Here are the threads in question, which I pulled from my journal. Note the first one included reports of a rash of hate crimes aimed at the Jewish community:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x107058
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x317917
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x137418

The slimebags who attacked Baltimore's Hebrew University didn't just pop up out of nowhere. They've BEEN there all along and what I want to know is, why the lack of interest -- lack of interest by the public, by the MSM, by DU, by the law enforcement officials who are supposed to be investigating these hate crimes?

I have to question those who say this particular attack in Baltimore just came out of the blue or suddenly arose as a result of what's happening between Lebanon and Israel. There is something very nasty going on in Maryland and it's called domestic terrorism. Anyone find it curious that a Maryland military base near Baltimore was also the source for the anthrax attacks?
