1. Check their site
Twitter is a privately funded startup with offices in the SoMA neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. Started as a side project in March of 2006, Twitter has grown into a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices.

2. I can't recall his name, but there was a recent story on him
in the New York Times, if I recall correctly. Was a fluke, apparently (Twitter, that is).

4. I'm curious to know that myself.
Its kinda strange how in Iran all of the other means of communication has been shut down yet twitter still keeps on twiting.

6. Not really - it's probably blocked and people are using proxies to get access
There's a big movement on Twitter right now to get proxy server information to the Iranian's so that they can continue using the service. It's basically a way around the official Iranian access point that controls the internet.

8. Actually there are ways around the filtering by Iranian government
You usually download a software that allows you to crack the filter placed on websites. Or you could connect to twitter via different ports.

The Iranian crackdown on websites has severely limited the amount of info that gets out but they can not completely shut it down. (Impossible)

10. Yeah -- it made $3 million for Dell last year -- very nice fad
Edited on Mon Jun-15-09 10:15 AM by nichomachus
Twitter is looking for ways to develop an income stream from business uses of it -- and also by selling products through Twitter. Apparently, that works, because Dell Computer used Twitter to sell stuff and made $3 million.

The "I'm in line at Starbucks and can't decide what to get" side of it is a fad and is stupid, but there are other uses which are just coming into focus.

However, Google Wave, when it comes out later this year, is going to blow a lot of things right out of the water.

11. So is that their business plan?
do they have advertising?

up until a month ago, they were still getting corporate welfare to keep afloat.

Their ROI still didn't show promise.

3 million sounds like a lot but I bet that's barely covers their operating costs.

The jury is still out for me. Until they can show a sustainable income to not only cover costs but also make a profit without the help of corporations, they still aren't a viable investment.

And mind you, I'm not slamming twitter, I see it as a potential growth media, but in it's current state, I really find it hard to see how they will survive.

12. I agree
I think there is some possibility -- but that they haven't found their niche yet. It will be interesting to see how it develops.
