Letterman made a really low-class out-of-bounds joke. He should probably be fired. If that statement had been made about Chelsea Clinton, or one of John Kerry's daughters everyone here would have been outraged. And rightly so. Well, how about this? The joke may have been tasteless. However, if the shoe fits (ie; a pregnant unmarried daughter), then why is everyone so outraged?
Neither of the other people (Chelsea or a Kerry daughter) you mentioned have been pregnant and unmarried, certainly against a prime Republican value. When we have Republican politicians trumpeting moral superiority and this happens to them, thy prove to be human and are subject to being skewered.

A advertiser pulled their ad that is how the cookie crumbles.

It is why most of the time people on TV don't cross the line and when they do they apologize.
