Senate's lone Hispanic Republican backs Sotomayor

JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS | July 17, 2009 12:44 PM EST | AP

WASHINGTON — The Senate's lone Hispanic Republican says he'll vote for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

Florida Republican Mel Martinez calls Sotomayor well-qualified and says he takes great pride as a Hispanic American in her historic achievement.

He's the second Republican to publicly announce his intention to vote for Sotomayor. Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar, the Senate's most senior Republican, announced earlier Friday he would support President Barack Obama's first Supreme Court nominee.

Martinez, who is not seeking re-election, was born in Cuba. Sotomayor is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents.

3. Let's be careful.
It wasn't that long ago that someone was complaining that Obama leaving the Senate meant that it was without minority members. I myself don't consider white Cubans (if there is another term for white Cuban I don't know it) to be nonwhite, if they were then Lucille Ball would simply be some old Ziegfeld girl lost in B&W movies, but there are folks who selectively include or exclude latinos from the caucasian ethnic supergroup.

4. Ah - is he one of the FL Castro-fleeing bigoted-Cuban-regime supporting latinos or something?
Point taken - there's more to it.

6. It's good he's supporting her. I don't like HuffPost's headline though. How many
Hispanic Democratic senators are there?
The headline implies a criticism of Repubs because of having only one, but Dems are hardly much better.
