15 percent of state-owned cars to be sold

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday signed an executive order calling for a garage sale to unload 15 percent of the state-owned vehicle fleet.
The governor cited an internal audit that found that many state workers who are permitted to drive home state vehicles have no reason to do so.
"Any waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars is absolutely unacceptable," the governor said in a written statement. "If we find it happening, we will take immediate action to correct it."
Schwarzenegger on Friday mandated the number of vehicles that state workers can take home to be reduced by at least 20 percent. He also ordered all state agencies and departments to conduct a survey to identify and justify what jobs require employees to take state automobiles home.
One example would be a state worker who regularly responds to emergencies during evenings and weekends, he said.
