DU a poll: Who is the best national news anchor of all time?

Pick your own. Looks like fun. I went with Edward R. Murrow. 1/3 of the way down. It is about the last thing to load. Enjoy. :-)

1. Not to dishonor the memory of Walter Kronkite in the slightest,

I voted Edward R. Murrow, if only for his courageous defiance of Senator McCarthy and McCarthyism in general!

2. I would suggest Dan Rather belongs on that list
He might not be the best but his body of work easily compares to those listed.

4. I agree. Dan Rather does not belong in the "Other" category.
He is definitely one of their peers and was very important to news up until the very recent past. He was made to look ridiculous so he could be silenced. Peter Jennings was excellent too, and at times was ridiculed.

9. Tom Brokaw garnered 16%??????????
I would wager that the majority of those voting are ones that were yet unborn or to young to have actually heard or viewed reports by Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow. These two men in their reporting had the ability to capture the ears and minds of both young and old. No matter if reporting via radio or TV, they gave the listener/viewer the sense that you were at whatever site the historic action was being played out. They gave history lessons never to be forgotten.

When, if ever has Tom Brokaw actually gotten down in the mud to investigate and write his own reports. The present day TV news media has become nothing more than pretty boys and girls reading news, written by lower paid staff members.

I have found that many DU posters provide me a better source of news than the pretty boys and girls/faux journalists as seen on the TV media. I have also noted that our journalist DU posters seem to have acquired and reported news on DU from 3-days to weeks prior to being reported by the faux journalists. DU writers/activists/journalists, investigate and offer their services to us all and even pay to help keep DU up and running. From this old lady, you have my heartfelt respect and regard. You are the ones who hold the high standards of Walter Cronkite and Edward R Murrow.

8. None. Their exaggerated stature has led to news readers becoming the wise sages among us with undue
influence on events and the thoughts of the public. Just being on TV imparts a sense of credibility, unfortunately. And TV is the opiate of the masses.
