SO...from Wed through Sunday Afternoon I was in the hospital deathly sick
I had pancreatitis probably brought on by Crohns disease
but since I am under 50 with no history of polyps or things of that nature my insurance only allows for a colonsocopy 1 every 5 years
so because of their "standards" I just cost them probably well over 300 grand
I NEVER want to be in the ICU ever again
At one point after another painful endless round of testing I joked that "you just know I Have decent insurance so you are running every test you can think of since I am in the hospital and you don't need prior approval...
Two points to note
Unless they tell you you will die without it do NOT let them give you an iv of pottassium
Arterial Blood Gas test hurts like a mother fucker
If one's potassium is very low, it can cause heart threatening arrythmias. IV potassium is quicker and we know the bioavailability better. They probably gave her potassium boluses and they hurt like a motherfucker but we only give them when they are absolutely necessary,
17. If she had pancreatitis, they probably weren't letting her have anything by mouth
-we HAVE been known to add lidocaine to our potassium IV to make it more tolerable, then run concurrently with the main IV.It is much more humane.(I care for a lot of pancreatitis patients)
I spent 10 days in one last December. They saved my life. They also took damn good care of me. They did it with grace, good humor and considerable style. I cme out of there grateful, and convinced the if nurses ruled the world we'd all be a lot better off.
I came out looking like I'd fallen down a flight of stairs; bruise all over. There's a lot of mindless process involved. And th amount of waste they generate is shocking.
What helped me with my Crohn's Disease was the Specific Carbohydrate Diet www.BreakingTheViciousCycle.info and Low Dose Naltrexone www.LowDoseNaltrexone.org
You just said it won't cover one unless the doctor calls them and tells them you need that specific one. That's called a prescription and isn't going to be any different under any health plan.
I'm sorry about your health problems and hope you get better,
BUT you make a few strange digs at the insurance industry when it appears to have worked perfectly for you and actually probably worked better than if you were on either a public option or a single payer plan. None of the minor "digs" you make at the insurance company would be any different in fact you may have gotten better or cheaper care because of your insurance.
23. I doubt that all insurance plans are the same.
Just because one co. doesn't cover a prescription, it doesn't mean that all insurance co. won't cover it. If a doc prescribes a certain pill, doesn't it mean that it is the pill that the patient needs????
I am still waiting to hear from the pharmacy on my fiance's script....that BCBS doesn't think he needs. Wonder when I'll hear back.
