Gov. Corzine signs new law limiting N.J. gun purchases (one a mo.)

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/08/gov_corzine_signs_new_law_limi.html

Gov. Jon Corzine today signed a controversial bill limiting handgun purchases to one every 30 days, a measure he said is aimed at slowing the supply of firearms to criminals.

"While we are winning some important battles against violent crime, we must remain aggressive in combating illegal possession, use and trafficking of firearms in New Jersey," said Corzine, who signed the legislation on the steps of Trenton City Hall.

1. This begs the question - Why would anyone need to purchase
a handgun once a month? Just asking.

4. You don't use a handgun twice.
After the murder you drop it in a storm drain. Gawd you guys, I can't keep giving this stuff away.

Guns are so amateurish.

Wink, wink yourself. ;)

6. Some people collect firearms.
I know collectors who go to gun shows searching rare & unusual firearms. It's very possible to run across more than one gun a month that is worth buying.

Why not limit automobile buyers to one vehicle a month?

21. My reply would be that there aren't very many items I need to go
out and buy once a month. A handgun serves a very specific purpose. It is used to shoot people. Unless I was planning on shooting somebody once a month and then disposing of the thing, I can't imagine a scenario in which I would need to buy a new one every month.

24. Nonetheless, the question stands.
The fact that you do not see a need for buying one a month does not mean that such a need does not exist.

28. Explain a circumstance where someone would need to
buy a new handgun every month. Not want to. Need to. I can understand the frequent need for a new toothbrush or a bar of soap. But a weapon? Why?

29. So it's need based?
Fascinating. What other perceived social goods could we accomplish with need-based limitations?

I can think of a few.

and I would support limits much lower. I can't see why any general person needs more than 2 per year. If people want to collect guns, just license them as a gun collector to get the higher purchase limits. It wouldn't be much more work to administer a gun collector license program and the gov't knows you have the weapons anyway due to existing gun registration laws.

15. Can't blame you
When I was a little kid in the late 1950s we used to drive from North Jersey to visit relatives in South Jersey. My brother and I always used to hold our noses when we drove past stinky Perth Amboy.

10. So a criminal, looking to purchase a gun illegally, would be thwarted
in his efforts on the last day of the month if he had already made one illegal purchase?

Dumb law. Does nothing except provide a talking point for reelection.

11. I'm no gun-rights supporter, but I hate BS.
Corzine ought to stick to making seat-belt PSA's.

Probably save more lives that way.

12. Trading a little liberty for a little security
Ben Franklin had something to say about this.

Maybe if Gov. Corzine went after the criminals themselves instead of picking on the law-abiding?

22. Unless you are a cop, I don't see how you could get the paperwork done to buy more than one a month
Each purchase requires a permit approved by your local police chief.

25. How will this law slow criminals?
Criminals are already not allowed to have firearms, so, how is this law directed towards criminals? Its not, its just another attempt from people who dislike or who are scared of freedom trying to prevent the human rights of others.
