NHL Star Arrested Over $1.20 in Change

Oh, oh. Is this another example of a celebrity of any type feeling entitled? Patrick Kane, hardly a household name outside of the NHL, was arrested over a taxicab incident.

According to reports, Patrick Kane was arrested for allegedly punching a cabbie in the face and failing to pay his cab fare, all over $1.20 in change. Kane, 20, and his brother James, 21, were in their home town of Buffalo, NY, when the incident occurred.

The issue: the cabbie told the Kanes that he didn't have the change to give them their full $1.20. He apparently did not have twenty cents in coins. This angered the two, who struck the cabbie in the face, breaking his glasses, and took the money back. Their fare was $13.80 and they handed the driver $15.

16. It'll take you about 3 or 4 miles in Oakland these days.
Not sure what Buffalo rates are... or whether or not they've had a recent fare hike approved by the city in response to general gas price increases (some cities are significantly slower to ok such increases, leaving the cabbies to swallow the loss of income as a result of higher operating expenses). Also not sure how big Buffalo is, but that 3 or 4 miles will generally be something on the order of 30-50 blocks... depending on the blocks and traffic delays.

Assault rather than give up 20 cents as a tip... just one of those days for a cabbie. (I used to get yelled at regularly if a fare thought my not making an illegal u-turn was liable to cost them an extra 24 cents... and then there were the fares that liked to argue that I should run stop signs to save them 24 cents... the ones that wanted me to wait on them at my own expense while they hopped out to pick up some crack/weed... etc.)

12. Cabbie should've offered him two bucks back since it was his problem, but
any idiot who would punch out someone for 20 cents needs anger management classes.

Kane also needs to learn about tipping and stop being such a cheapskate. Letting the cabbie keep the change would be giving him less than a 10% tip.

23. Blackhawks star Kane arrested
BUFFALO, New York — Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane, last year's National Hockey League Rookie of the Year, was arrested early Sunday after an altercation in his hometown with a cab driver.

Buffalo television station WIVB reported that Kane pleaded not guilty to charges of felony robbery and misdemeanors of theft of services and criminal mischief that both he and a cousin face following the incident.

Kane, 20, caught a cab from the city's nightclub district and a police report says the driver claimed he was punched and hit by both men because he did not have 20 cents in change for them, leaving cuts to his face and damaging his glasses.

In his first two NHL seasons, Kane has 46 goals and 96 assists for the Blackhawks, who have become a contender in part thanks to Kane's contributions.

24. Blackhawks' Patrick Kane arrested: reports
Blackhawk star winger and U.S. Olympian Patrick Kane gave the team a black eye and even caught his mother off guard early Sunday when he and cousin, James M. Kane were arrested in his hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., at 4 a.m. for allegedly assaulting a cab driver and grabbing back the $13.80 fare when the driver said he was 20 cents short of giving them change for $15.

The cab driver told police he was punched in the face, grabbed by the throat and his glasses broken, according to a police report. A torn $5 bill was reportedly found in James Kane's pocket while in the Erie County Holding Center.

25. Blackhawks star Kane arrested for robbing cabbie
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Patrick Kane, the star winger for the Chicago Blackhawks, was arrested on Sunday and charged with robbing a cab driver in Buffalo, New York, according to Buffalo police.
Kane, 20, and his cousin, James Kane, 21, were charged with second-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services for allegedly assaulting a cab driver and taking back money after a dispute over the fare, police said.

The cab driver suffered cuts to his face, and his eyeglasses were damaged after apparently being punched in the face and head in the incident, which occurred at about 4 a.m. EDT Sunday, said police spokesman Michael DeGeorge.

Local media reported that the Kanes paid the driver $15 for a $13.80 fare and were angered when the driver did not have proper change.

26. This is absurd on so many levels
An NHL hockey player, who I am willing to bet makes at least six figures; probably a lot more, punches a cab driver over a $1.20. Are you kidding me. This doesn't even make sense. I have paid for coffee and told the person behind the counter to just keep the change. It is a dollar and fucking twenty cents. Most people have more than that beneath their couch cushions at home. I am betting there is more to this story than the money. This hockey player had something else on his mind at the time, at least I am willing to bet.

28. For practicality's sake, cabs should carry change in both cash and coin. Period.
I've had Cabbies that say they don't have change for $20 so they can insure themselves a $5 tip on a $15 ride. This is usually a tactic to up tips that goes under the radar. But really if your meter charges by the dime, you better be prepared to have change to give them back. Nobody is under the obligation to tip a driver especially if they have a lousy experience.

48. Um, isn't it the CUSTOMER'S responsibility to provide correct change if needed?
If he had tried to pay with a $50 bill, and the cabbie had gone to the cops, want to bet who the law would side with?

Don't hail a cab, or place an order in a restaurant, if you aren't equipped to pay. Look up "theft of services". If that sounds harsh to you, consider that such laws were passed only after repeated abuses.
