Questions for NJ-ites about governor's race & what's with DOJ not doing FOIAs?
1) Isn't NJ dependably Dem? Why is CORZINE behind?

2) This gossip item portrays the Rethug as not "fulfilling FOIA requests" then at the end says this is a DOJ function. Huh? Why would the DOJ be hanging back?

Not a question: The Rethug is "a major fundraiser for" Shrub. UGH. Just UGH.

3) What's the outlook for the outcome?

INTRIGUE IN JERSEY GOV RACE

NEW Jersey's incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine thinks Republican challenger Chris Christie, who's clobbering him in the polls, is hiding something.

A press release sent out by Corzine, a former US senator as well as the former CEO of Goldman Sachs, accuses Christie, a major fund-raiser for George W. Bush, of failing to comply with his campaign's efforts to obtain basic information about Christie's stint as the Garden State's US attorney.

According to the release, more than 20 requests for Christie's budget, travel expenditures, and no-bid contracts made under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) have gone unfilled. Jersey State Sen. Loretta Weinberg, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, says, "Mr. Christie's campaign Web site says he will demand greater transparency and accountability in government. So why doesn't he start with himself? What's he hiding?" ....

Still, a Jersey Democratic operative said, "Everyone's wondering what's in the documents that the Corzine campaign requested." A Christie campaign rep said, "The campaign has nothing to do with fulfilling FOIA requests, and as such these requests are in the hands of the Justice Department."

1. As for NJ being reliably Dem...
I'm from NJ. Everyone likes to complain about whoever is in charge. It's reliably dem but also reliably anti-incumbent as far as governer's go.

I gotta be honest I'm not a fan of Corzine. He's always seemed a little too big business shady to me. I realize he's up against a lot with state budgets and losses of revenue, etc. that are beyond his control.

But NJ has ridiculously, insanely high property taxes. I'm fine with that, and I understand the reasoning. But most people don't and are always, perpetually pissed about it.

4. You're right about NJ being anti-incumbant
I remember seeing "Dump Florio" bumber stickers 1 month after he took office!

3. New Jersey may turn purple but will never turn red

because New Jersey is the unpretension capital of the world. Sure the polls look look, but Corzine has only begun to fight back, and all that takes is for him to remind people that his opponent is a Republican!

5. LOL - Ode to my faithfully lurking UnRekkker!1
Dear One,

Guess what, not EVERY thread posted in GD is worth EITHER a Rec OR an UnReKKK!1 And I myself said many times during the Great Debate on UnRekkk that I never look at the Greatest Page and regard it mostly as a tool for Visitors, like media types, who don't have the time to spend in the entrails of GD, but how I DO a lot of Rec-ing (obviously, for OTHERS), both for merit and to keep worthy topics from falling through the cracks.

Ah, you DISAPPROVE of thread after thread!1 Woe is YOU!1 Kisses to make your sour woe all better for you!1

6. I'm in northwest NJ
It's republiturd country up here and I think it's the same in a lot of the suburban or rural areas of the state. What puts Dems over the top is the more densely populated areas of the state. I agree that New Jerseyans like to bitch, but I'm hoping the "Corzine isn't a republican" idea will catch on. I warned people after Bush got in that trickle down doesn't work in government either...if he bankrupts the federal government, nothing will be left over to help the states and we'll all be screwed. The Bush economic mess is Corzine's biggest problem. He's got my vote.
