WCCO, our Twin Cities CBS affiliate, broke into the
CBS Evening news about 20 minutes into the show for a freaking Brett Favre press conference. That carried into their local news a 6. The entire half hour of that local news program was absolutely nothing but Favre.

It's a freaking boys' game of ball. And they completely ignored everything else going on in the world to cover this washed up has-been's ill-fated return to playing football.

Something is desperately wrong with this. Something is terribly wrong.

1. That guy who said he would stay retired? Like I said, his new number should be .04
because he was half-drunk at the time...

2. I know Jim Lehrer and the News Hour are available on your PBS affiliate.
If the Favre story is mentioned at all, they would spend about ten seconds on it.

12. True, but I watch the local news, because it's, well, local news.
It's my choice to do that, I believe. I watch a variety of news programs, you see...

15. 'everything going on in the world' vs 'local news'
Well, i'm guessing Brett Favre is the biggest local news. I don't expect much in-depth coverage of world events from my local affiliate stations either.

19. Favre is local news. Problem solved. Find regional, national, international news.
BBC has an America international service.

You should be in a rare vortex of progressive voices.

Listen for grain reports at the bottom of the dial if you want local radio flavor.

4. Their web site had a video clip of his plane landing.
This went on for about 5 minutes. It was a nice plane (the Vikings' actually), but please esplain to me why a plane landing is news just because there's some famous guy in it.

7. Actually it was the Vikings' owner's plane. Milf or Wilf or whatever his name is.
Another billionaire who's about to stick it to the taxpayers.

Thanks to that socialist Pawlenty.

5. They all did it: KARE11 (NBC) and KSTP (ABC)
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 08:01 PM by question everything
And I made a point not to turn into the local news at 5:00, not even for weather. Could not escape it.

Ended up watching the end of Blitzer. And even ABC said they were going to talk about it.

MPR, too, had it in the head of the news and you know how the dailies will look tomorrow.

6. It's disgusting. And I see this whole Favre deal as a way to get a new stadium built by taxpayers.
Even in this economy big business and sports continue to suck taxpayers dry.

And conservatives cry socialism regarding health care.

9. Isn't that the guy whose name is spelled Favre, but is pronounced Farve?
I know, I know.

Hey, I know NOTHING about football. Nobody in our family has much of a sports gene.

13. Russians have vodka. We have football. And beer. Lots and lots of beer.
This Favre fellow's news coverage resembles, well, Russia.

I'm starting to understand the Russian predilection to drink.

After all, what better way to self-medicate is there than sports?

GOOOO BLAZERS!!!!

I'm with you. That would really piss me off!

18. It's big news for the twin cities.
You may not care for football, but a majority of the viewing audience does, and this is very big news. Despite all the troubles in the world, people still care about art, music, culture, sports, literature, and other interests that are not life and death. Deal.

21. Sounds like Denver media.
Especially as football season approaches. There are sports fans, and there are sports junkies. The stations cater to the junkies. I used to enjoy watching the games, but got sick of the fawning. I get better national news from the net; sadly, the local newsies are too enamored of the endzone to crawl out of it for anything but a catastrophe.

22. Umm - you sound like a disgruntled Packer fan
In some Minnesota circles, the Vikings are the center of the universe. I'm not endorsing, mind you. Just observing.
