In my dreams the darkness stalking Empty streets down which I’m walking A soupy fog of a future sings to me
A stretching highway in the distance Abandoned toll booths A highway store Still open, Serving burgers, selling coffee And more
Way station before the road Leading somewhere black Ominous destinations Several cars moving slowly Weary travelers Roaming blindly down the strip
Comfort here, but fleeting Coffee is bad, burgers burnt Man at the counter incapable of smiles He takes my coins TV takes his eyes I wish myself a good day But only the road waits
We’ve left the last chance saloon The burger joint is closed No more cups of Joe at Joe’s The Highway Store is in our mirror
Nothing to do but move on To darker places than we’ve ever been Ignoring the other drivers Cutting off one or two Maybe even hitting a walker If it cuts the time a bit To make the next rest stop
But it’s not coming And we don’t know where we’re going Only that the tank is nearly empty -S
