At best,Polk directories were updated once a year in the old days. Sometimes they were updated less often. Ann Dunham could have lived with her parents when one year's directory was updated and have left Hawaii by the time the next year's was. Barack Obama Sr. could have lived at a different address by himself and either moved or shared that place with Ann after Baby Barack was born.

I worked for Polk for a while when I was in college. The quality of information was only as good as what the people at the address were willing to share. I had people lie to me, refuse to answer the door, or just not be home and not be willing to return the information packet we'd leave.

These days apparently Polk cross references utility records and other information to verify their info and update it more often, but back then the records were not very good.

Also since Ann Dunham was a student, married to a student, she could have used her parents' address for a permanent address for something as important as a birth certificate.
