GOP Leaders Attack White House: You Killed Bipartisanship

Despite recent gestures by the White House and Dems — softening on the public option, deferring to the bipartisan negotiations on the Senate Finance Committee, etc. — Republican leaders are now blaming the White House for killing bipartisanship.

In response to my post below on Rahm Emanuel’s declaration that the GOP’s primary goal is to kill health care reform at all costs, GOP leaders unloaded, sending over statements claiming that Rahm and the White House are the ones who iced bipartisanship.

From NRCC spokesman Ken Spain:

“If bipartisanship is dead its because Rahm Emanuel led the charge to kill it. When you’re openly stating things like a ‘crisis should never go to waste’ then it is safe to say that you are abusing your perch and engaging in activity that is more befitting of a party boss and less befitting of a White House Chief of Staff.”

From John Boehner spokesman Michael Steel:

“It’s a shame that the White House and their liberal allies are now trying re-write history. From the beginning of this debate, Republicans have tried to work with the President and Democrats on real health care reform that reduces cost and expands access for the American people. Instead, Democrats played the old Washington game, bribing and log-rolling special interests to produce a plan that will cost at least a trillion dollars and just won’t work.”

The merits of these arguments aside, the eruption of this argument could, if it gains traction, bring about a real media debate over which side is guilty of pursuing bipartisanship in bad faith. Polls show more Americans blame Republicans; it would be useful if “nonpartisan” opinion leader types took a stand on this question. Who’s the guilty party?

2. I should hope that after 7 months the administration realizes, forget compromise
You will not be able to compromise with people who call you "nazi", "communist", or the republican party who has openly said they will do everything in their power to have healthcare fail

7. And so the plan works according to how it should. Rethugs are falling for it.
Duh, the WH knew the Rethugs would never actually do bipartisanship. That much was clear on the stimulus bill. Now the Rethugs can be all whiny and look like they are the ones stopping progress.

15. There you go again - The republicans in a poll have a 62% disapproval
rating. That tells me they are part of the problem not the solution.

18. It would be funny if
it were not so pathetic "From the beginning of this debate, Republicans have tried to work with the President and Democrats...". Really? REALLY? I am one of the few on this board that thinks that not all republicans are evil incarnate and bi/post-partisanship is something to aim and work for. And is one of things I liked about Obama from the very beginning. Unfortunately the current crew, with barely any exeption, seems to be beyond redemption.

They place party and ideology above Country. this is unforgivable.
