Some asshat used to bring a gun to our gaming sessions.
Well, my friend still plays D&D and I joined in a couple of times because I wanted to do something with my friends and it was a good time to shoot the shit and laugh and what not. Any way, some how my one friend's boss started joining in too. There was one session where the boss brought a gun in holster on his belt and laid it out on the table when he first got there and was setting up. My attitude was "Holy shit! Why? What's the point?" He said some shit about defending his family. We played in the back room of a gaming store, it was usually on Saturdays with a bunch of kids running around. The guy is a real asshole.

Here is the real kicker. Not making this up. They both work for the largest "managed healthcare services provider", they both think they are taxed too high and they are both "libertarians". My friend is an idiot for ever letting this asshole into his private life. My friend is alright, he's just greedy and has low self-esteem issues because he grew up with a messed up family life.

I guess the boss thought since we were a bunch of geeks this would be a good place to prove his manhood and strut it about. I get the feeling he also kind of "muscled" his way into the gaming sessions to begin with.

3. I would have tortured him as a GM...
I would constantly press his buttons in game with subtle situations that forced him to face his own demons.

Maybe a Hobbit village that found the party's constant armed status offensive, or maybe set him up to confiscate weapons from his people if he had level enough to have followers. Oh, I would have had fun with him.

4. This is like the kid I knew in junior high school who always carried a condom around with him...
Sure, there were some really cool guys who were probably getting some but I promise you this guy wasn't one of them. Still, he carried it around in his little velcro wallet, just in case the situation arose - "you never know when you're gonna need it..." he would always say.

I just hope he got a new one by the time he really DID need one cause I'm sure that one he stole from his dad's drawer in 7th grade was way past it's expiration by then.

5. growing up "messed up" is a common thread with many libertarians
They have serious authority issues they never resolved, in many cases.

Grover Norquist is a classic case, as is Bob Barr

Unfortunately their personal issues end up becoming our political problems

6. Um...... I own a gun. I've used it twice.
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 02:12 PM by theaveng
(1) I was in Philadelphia with my girlfriend about ten years ago - sightseeing. She wandered off to look at some ancient building when a guy grabbed her, brandished a knife at her, and demanded money. He didn't see me so I snuck-up behind, held the barrel of my gun to his head, and said calmly, "Let her go, or die." He ran off. I consider this a life saved since he could have easily murdered her.

(2) Another time was just a few months ago when I was going to work at 4:30 a.m. and needed to stop to buy gasoline. Some guy tried to jump in my car, but when I whipped out my gun, he immediately hopped-out again and ran off.

I own my body.

I have the right to protect it, my family, or my property from harm. To quote our Democratic Party founder - "A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the Body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind . . . Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." --Thomas Jefferson, Letter to his nephew Peter Carr, August 19, 1785. - and- "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government" (And also self-defense. - editor) -- Thomas Jefferson, 1 Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334.

As for your D&D pal, I agree he went overboard tossing the gun on the table. It does sounds like "showing off", but I support his right to protect himself as he travels to-and-from the house. There are a lot of dangerous people out there.

37. No Jefferson.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic-Republican_Party

"The Democratic-republican Party was founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison around 1792." The party then split in 1824 and became today's modern Democratic Party and the Whigs (defunct). In 1991 the Senate voted to from a celebratory commission for the 200th birthday of the DP, which therefore corresponds to a birthdate of 1791 or 92, which would have been long before Jackson entered the picture.

12. As a gun owner and someone who had used firearms in combat I find your "stories" laughable.
Actually they are just sad. You create the perception that all gun owners are gun nuts.

Sigh.
"Let her go or die." Really? That is the most realistic fake story you could come up with. How old are you, 12?

Do you own your body free and clear or do you have a mortgage on it? What is the property taxes run for a body these days anyways.
Well you will be gone soon but unless the mods scrub you your idiocy will remain forever.

16. So you own a gun?
So what would you do if your girlfriend was being held at knifepoint? Just keep your gun holstered? How does that help save her?

And yes I own my body. As opposed to if, for example, I lived in 1800 in which case I would not own my body. (I'd have been a slave, and my body would be owned by some white dude.) It's a basic natural right that you own yourself, and also to protect yourself from harm my others.

32. Well...
Jefferson was anti-slavery and submitted many bills to the Legislature to free Virginia slaves, but was largely ignored by his contemporaries. Unfortunately.

So instead we fought a Civil War. The cost of the war exceeded by several billion dollars (in todays money) how much it would have cost us to simply follow Jefferson's earlier proposal - buy the slaves; free them. Oh well. Freedom doesn't come instantly. It's a process that takes time and occasionally a paradigm shift (the old generation dies and the new generation takes over).

29. Dunno about his story, but I've used a gun myself.
Worked real great when some goons were ripping off parts from my car at 4am, pumped the 12 guage and yelled "ya better start running".. and boy they sure did...

Good thing too as the gun wasn't even loaded.

Only time I could have really used one, was when I didn't have one and some drunk asshole decided he wanted to shoot me, and took some shots from his truck window.. All I could do was run for cover and hope he didn't get out and chase me, which he didn't. He sped away as the noise started drawing attention. Would have felt better being armed, and I did carry at times after that.

34. (shrug) I have other stories ye wouldn't believe either
Like the fact I've been caught in three different fires.

One in 1998 when my apartment building caught on fire, but fortunately the firewall protected my half of said building from going-up in smoke. Then in 2005 I was staying in a Grand Rapids Michigan hotel that cuaght fire. The lobby burned to the ground. And finally in 2007 in an Oklahoma City hotel, the entire building was evacuated when some fool burned his dinner and half his room (the kitchenette half).

If you choose not to believe, so be it. It happened.

44. shoot?
He didn't have a gun. He had a knife. If he made a move I'd have shot his head - he's going to die anyway, whether it's by my hand or through natural causes (old age).

I suppose I could have just stood there and watched "the goon" stab my girlfriend's back and kill her, but that's not my personality. I'm more like that bank teller who chased-down and tackled the thief. (Although in that case I wouldn't care if Megacorp Bank lost money and would just shrug my shoulders and say "oh well", but it's different when you know the person being attacked.)

Yeah you're right a fake gun would have worked in these two cases, unless the guy swung-around and attacked me. Which is why I carry a real gun, so the threat of bodily injury to the murderer is not an empty one.

He's a good guy, from the dope wing of the Libertarian Party. He relayed a story that prior to the election he was approached by a friend of his who told him that while he was prepared to vote for my friend he was concerned because another fellow also running for local office on the LP ticket insisted on coming to pick up his child at the preschool with a loader .45 holstered to his leg. Needless to say neither was elected.
