THey are gonna make MY MEDICARE a gov'ment program!
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 02:45 PM by nadinbrzezinski
I actually had a talk with an older man today at the store. He actually said that.

So I was befuddled, I knew about the 35% who does not want the guv'ment in their health care but this one was a real ife one.

So I gently asked, you know your medicare IS a government program?

No it isn't, I can see my private doctor! (Apparently in a government run program you can't, who knew?)

"Let me show you." Took out the Ipod Touch and went to the medicare program website and pointed to the GOV at the end of the domain name. This was a revelation to him, a real revelation.

But, but, I heard it on Rush... (no, not kidding there)

So I asked him, you think Rush has your middle class interests at heart?

Yes.

How could a man who's net worth is over 30 million dollars care about you? And no I don't begrudge him his wealth, all I am saying is that this is not a man who cares about you.

But, but, he cares about family values!

That is why he told you medicare was not a government program and he also said that all drug users should be in jail for life, or sent to the Netherlands. Is he transmitting the show from the Netherlands or the joint? He was indicted of doctor shopping. Only reason he is still walking free is a deal with the DA, and the fact that he has those millions. If he was a poor white, he'd be in jail.

In the end we said our goodbyes, I paid for my groceries, he paid for his, and we went our own ways. I have my doubts I reached him, as civil as this remained, which was shocking... but others listened to that conversation.

2. you can see part of the confusion there: health providers vs health insurance.
I mean, he also clearly didn't realize medicare was govt run, but his logic had something to do with "health care provider private ==> medicare private"

Which is another way of realizing that Single Payer wasn't properly explained or sold to the public.

4. That is part of the problem, but there is also the propaganda principle
repeat a lie often enough....

Of course I left out of it that we get government care too, and that I want all in the US to have the opportunity to get the same care I am getting. (I mean I am way young for medicare, if you get my drift)

5. I think it was explained just fine.. ad nauseum.
But then I don't listen to Limbaugh or Faux News, so I don't get the truthiness drilled into me 7 hours a day.

It's the lies, and the lying liars who tell them.

6. Nicely done, that was a very reasonable and rational way
to explain any misinformation, I wish others would use the same approach. You may not have reached him or any others listening but using that approach you certainly have a better chance of them reconsidering things later than had you handled it as I've read about in so many other posts on here... basically taking the fire and brimstone burn in hell for eternity for not agreeing with me approach.

16. Fire and brimstone has come out as well
it really depends on the circumstances. I was shocked, usually people like this man don't want to hear it, and start screaming before you get a word edgewise.

This was a very rare conversation at many levels.

I had to wonder if this guy was looking for the "truth" out there to begin with. There are moments of awakening every so often... or rather rarely.

7. Rush = Family Values. Bwahahahahaha!!!
Aside from the rumors, the authentic history is quite clear on the matter.

They love the HATE, and that's the real shame.

14. Facts don't matter.
Limbaugh's fans, and many even on this side of he aisle, run on emotion and feel good messages. Nadin, I admire you for trying to convince people. Most people I discuss these issues with, one of them my brother, refuses to even engage in a rational discussion. In fact, they consider me (and all Democrats/progressives) irrational for not accepting their arguments.

a perfect stranger can break more easily... ok should qualify this, rarely a perfect stranger, can break though the noise better than family members.
