It seems like they use to never go on break just have fill ins for when they were gone. Well at least the TDS. I wonder why Jon doesn't let one of his 1000 helpers man the desk for the break? I guess they spend so much $$ on production that they don't want to risk the expense of the show during the break.
Given the choice of the opportunity for 30 minutes of TV exposure or going on vacation I seriously doubt they wouldn't say I'll do the show. I remember in the old days seeing Colbert and Carell man the desk while Jon was out. I don't know why they don't do that anymore? My only guess is the show cost way more to produce than it did back then. Heck Carson always let people sub for him.
