Could someone educate me re Gore and the Internet?
HI, thanks for looking at my post. I've often seen people thank Al for the 'creation' of the internet as a means for people to share information horizontally outside corporate media control. I know all of us feel indebted to it, that we wouldn't be able to challenge the Bush/Neocon agenda as effectively as we have without it. I think most of us would agree that, despite its problems, the Internet has been the last bastion of truly free speech in America.

I'm hoping people more knowledgeable than I am regarding Gore's role in helping bring the Internet to fruition will give me some more specific information. I've begun some research with this: http://www.isoc.org/help/?cx=015267653312545538371%3Adihpk_sjx-e&cof=FORID%3A9&q=%22al+gore%22&sa=Search but that is a lot to go through. I'm hoping someone who already has a summary of Gore's role will post ideas or links that will be helpful.

Much appreciated TIA,

BMU

1. Here is a little from Wikipedia:
In the late 1980s, Gore introduced the Gore Bill, which was later passed as the High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991. The bill was one of the most important pieces of legislation directly affecting the expansion of the internet.

2. It is called 'the google'. Try: al gore internet
Seems to be full of good information.

For example here is the wiki on this idiocy:

1999 CNN interview
As a result of the publication of three articles in Wired News,<83> Gore's 1999-03-09 interview on CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer became the subject of heavy satire.<84> During this interview, Gore stated:

During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.<85>
Media reports surrounding this statement sometimes re-wrote it, stating that Gore claimed he "invented the internet".<86> Gore received support from members of the computer industry, however, notably Internet pioneers Vint Cerf and Robert E. Kahn. Cerf and Kahn issued the following statement on 2000-09-28 in response to the controversy:

s the two people who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time.
Last year the Vice President made a straightforward statement on his role. He said: "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet." We don't think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he "invented" the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet. The fact of the matter is that Gore was talking about and promoting the Internet long before most people were listening. We feel it is timely to offer our perspective.<87>
Gore, himself, poked fun at the controversy. In September 2000, as a guest on the The Late Show with David Letterman, he read a list of the "Top Ten Rejected Gore - Lieberman Campaign Slogans." Number nine on the list was: "Remember, America, I gave you the Internet, and I can take it away!"<88>

3. Easy as 1.2.3.

Here's the word from Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf:
http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/200009/msg00052.html

So who's Vinton Cerf?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinton_Cerf

And Robert Kahn?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Kahn

And, incidentally, anyone disputing the thrust of Gore's remark, and who does not know who Vinton Cerf is would be an uninformed blockhead. You should tell them to google Vinton Cerf and then get back to you to discuss the orgins of the public internet.
